hi . just wondering if any one could help/shed some light ?? ive got a 1966 series /defender/hybrid beasty .. and at the moment shes got a very old lookin rover 3.5 v8 running on carbs (not su but similar) . its even got points and condenser ...lol im a mot tester by trade so i know that points and condenser are old school .. any way .. it will start from cold .. (with choke of course) but as the engine gets warmer . the worse the running gets .. untill the point where i have to limp down the road at about 2 mph (embarrsin much ?) spluttering and popping and banging .. then i will get home . leave her running . and all is well again .. ticks over .. revs .. all good .. till i set off again ... then the one man band under the bonnet starts ??????????????????? and its doing my head in .. i have replaced lots . each time it gets slightly better .. but not the purr a v8 should have .. heeeelllpppppp

Had similar problems when I picked up a '69 Rover P6 (same engine I believe). New points, plugs and as Fett said timing, a weekend of balancing the carbs (by ear!) and off we roared.

had same problems with my v8 in my snatch turned our it was carbs it wouldnt rev up spluttered popped banged stripped carbs down and changed fuel filter balanced carbs now runs great..

Hey . Thanks every one. She breaths . And lives . Well ? More like snortin and spittin . I think i managed to get an old age v8 . With every possible fault . Its now got new .... Plugs , leads , cap , rotor , points, condensor , counter weights , vac unit , coil , a new fuel feed line , fuel filter . After replacing this small fortune of parts . She started . And ticked over with out me havin to "tickle" her . Oo err . But still no power . So off came the carbs . Fully stripped down. Rebuilt carefully and cleaned out . (they were mingin inside) . And only one was gettin vacuum . So swaped diaphram . She runs sweet as now . Not suprised after the coin spent . Just gotta strobe light the timing . To get her spot on . Yipee . Here come the muddy bit . So thanks guys for all ya advise . Looks like you all was rite in ya own ways . Lol . This engine best not let me down .it owes me a fortune. Lol

I was a bit scared to buy one .. I like charging through rivers . Cant beat a tdi for that. Lol . But a couple of mates talked me into v8 power . I seen theres get up some serious inclines . And thats where the v8 works its magic . Gonna miss the water . Lol .

You can make a V8 like water for very little cost, not anywhere near as good as a tdi but good enough to keep you going. If you do a search on here there's a few threads about it ;)

you can get those 8 finger glove thingies for your dizy and coil, about £40 , seen just dizy ones for £20 , thing is they look like you need straigh leads off your cap,not long bought 90 deg ones

the dizzy gloves are ****, they hold water in.

seal the dizzy entirely and add a breather pipe to high level. get good leads and fit new plugs every few months if you use the car regular.

it will be fairly waterproof then, remove the fan when necessary.

most of the **** in my engine bay is thrown up by the pullys,im in the process of makeing a splash cover, may sound **** but i have every confidence. have to go stedy round water ive no snorkle

I am going to snorkel it and waterproof it .. Just not going to the expense of making it a deep sea diver . Lol .

Sealed dizzy (remove it and get the holes underneath) then add a breather in the cap, splash cover made from 2ltr coke bottle for dizzy, cable tie the king lead on at both ends, grease up the coil, grease up the MAF plug, remove fan shield so that fan can be removed easily when approaching water (if you don't remove the shield then you'll be encouraged not to remove the fan and this attitude gets you wet feet!) and new plugs every six months.

This prep got me through corwen car wash and back in February without a misfire :)
