my disco 300tdi 1997 started running a bit poor...

hesitant when gettin near 3000rpm..

lift pump was leaking, so put another on.. it broke(the arm that goes into the block snapped) so i took it back and got another.. was a little better..

new filters etc..

cleaned sedimenter by undoing screw on bottom, cant get bowl off cos some one has rounded the bolt on the top, and it wont undo. got some sludge and water out..

its slowly been gettin worse and worse, and a pain to start.. takes a good 20 seconds on starter before it will fire up. once it starts i gotta slip clutch and hold at 2500rpm to get it to move and i got no chance on a hill start.. once its been runnin a bit it gets a bit more power. on motorway will cruise at 50 until i get to a hill then i gotta drop down to 4th or even 3rd to keep at 50..

so i've again changed fuel filter, the one i took off was very dirty..

tried to drain the sedimenter today and only a few drips came out of the drain hole.. took a few minuted to get less than an egg cup full..

i stuck a cable tie through the drain hole in the sedimenter and wiggled it about, but still only drips comin out of it.. the haynes manual says "let it run til fuel runs clear".. mine dont run it just drips bout once every 3 seconds.

what's goin on?
 
cant get the dam thing off though....

and advise on removing the top bolt... its rounded, access is a night-mare.

cant get mi lump hammer anywhere near it!
 
I'd also check the fuel pipes. Boot floor, remove the panel, check how corroded/split the pipes are. There's every chance, 'specially if you go off-road or wading a lot, that mud and ****e can get into the fuel pipes at the connections.

If you're just going to by-pass the sedimenter, get a long enough pipe and connections and just cut the fuel pipes fore and aft, then join them together .. leave the sedimenter there .. ;)

You will need 2 metres of 8mm fuel pipe [internal diameter] and a couple of small jubilee clips. Cut the pipe just after the sedimenter and push old pipe inside new at least 25mm then tighten the clip . same on fuel sender . Job done. :) Drive off into the sunset with beaming grin :D

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a small split on the underside of the top inter cooler pipe. It was only visible when I removed it
 
ok... gettin confused now...

when ya take the drain plug out of the sedimenter should i get a flow of fuel as mine only drips?...

i would think it would hold more than i got out of it and it would run pretty fast, not just drip a bit..

if its only dripping a bit its either full of crap or empty.. if its empty i would agree with the holed fuel line between tank and sedimenter..

i dont think the leak back pipe or the intercooler pipe split would cause the sedimenter to be empty... unless i'm completely wrong?
 
well i've had another look today...

had a new lift pump to fit so did that first then empied the boot of crap, lifted the carpet and ground off the fixings holding the inspection plate above tank.. no ides what the fixings were, possibly pop rivets..

got the plate off, cut mi finger so had to stop to stem the flow off blood and clean up the mess...

r lass was out so got her vac out to remove all the crud down the sides and top of tank..

connectors to pipes are very corroded, the plastic covers on em have disintigrated and loads of rust..

started the injun and can hear air being sucked in somewhere, think its the bits of pipe comin out of the sender not the fuel lines..

so think need new sender and replace fuel lines..

no, just swapped the sender..

the sedimenter was empty of fuel cos air was being sucked in at the tank..

both the metal pipes that connect to the end of the fuel lines were so corroded they were porous and lettin air in and fuel out....
 
Well done Nick, You should get at least a couple of hundred miles before something else goes belly up! :lol:
