Poor Heating in my Defender.

When I had my old 2.6 Safari (old F Reg 1968 I think) the "heater" was a total joke, and we were having seriously cold winters in the mid-1970s.

I fiited two big fan-blown Smiths car or van heaters in the back and plumbed them in using half-inch copper pipes along the chassis, insulated and all. It worked a treat, and the three heaters alone were enough cooling for the engine on cold runs. It got quite cosy in there.

I am gonna show my naivety now. Where would I get one of them from? Make? What sort of price?

Cheers

OOoohhhhh Sexy.

Cheers Guv'nor:D

SEXY ????

The only item shown is a 300 watt heater that's going to cost well over £100, and which will do exactly BUGGER-ALL GOOD in a LandRover on a cold day.

You are going to need several KILO-watts if you want to feel cosy in there.

The ONLY way to get that in a car is from the cooling system's water. There is no other source of continuous power or heat, with the singler exception of a lethal heat exchanger system on the exhaust like the VW Beetles used. Don't even think about it - use the hot water.

Remember, the radiator coolant has to get rid of a third of all the heat from burning the fuel, and even cruising along gently that could take 50 - 80 bhp which means about 10 to 15 KILOwatts of heat in the cooling system you can make use of FREE.
1 bhp is worth almost exactly 750 watts.

think about blocking up the holes/leaks/gaps in yer vehicle before you try pumping more heat in -

think insulate not radiate

dunno if i was blind - but i was sure i saw a cab heater which stated...

"Complete cabin heater. Connects into vehicles cooling system.
Includes mounting kit, switch and 16mm OD water connection.
Dimensions: 170 x 170 x 190mm.
12V 50W fan motor. 360m3/h air circulation. 6kw output."

did you missthat, Charlesy?

I werent recommending them - just saying here is a place which sells that sorta stuff.

Well that would be the bee's bollocks, and you're right, I didn't spot it.
As long as the HEAT comes from the coolant it will be great. 6kW would make a Helluva difference in a draughty Defender!

Did you spot what the thing cost?

CharlesY

ya could always move yer passenger seat closer and always carry a spare in a fur coat. just gotta disconnect the voice box somehow

Hmmm.... £155 plus vat and posting and fitting .... a £200 job .... and 6 kW is quite a lot of heat .....
