Poor Fuel Eco on TD5

What can cause the above turbo, egr has been removed or anything else?

You've not really given us anything to work on.

Have you done a brim to brim test to identify precisely what fuel consumption you are getting? If you haven't, that might be the place to start, to establish a current baseline, before trying to find improvements.

The biggest single mpg determining factor is driving style.

First brim test over 80 miles got 28.5 mpg, but now its half way between half and 3/4 and done 120 miles i'm expecting at least 500 miles a tank.

28.5mpg sounds exactly what I would expect - you don't give any info on usuage ie. town driving country driving, towing etc.

Is this a vehicle that you have recently purchased? If so, perhaps it's just that you are not used to how the gauge operates?

If in doubt, fill it again and see what the mpg is?

Driving is mixed but mainly country roads and dual carriage way village bypasses, not really any town driving.

Got it on news years eve but had a raft of problems whiuch i have fixd, had two bad airbags, bad wattrs links steeng ball joint nad Fuel pressure reg leaking. All been replaced and sorted.

Just i'm off to paris is the early hours of tomorrow and not had a chance to do enough miles to use a full tank yet, so am a little worried that i'm leaking deisel or soemthing else is causing poor mpg. it might just be me not used to the guage yet.

Do you think 500 miles is about right for a tank?

My driving style is not that heavy on the right foot never rev above 3k on acceleration probably move like 2k in lower gears normaly short shift from 1st to second and tend to drive at 70 on the faster stretches and its doing about 2750 rpm at that speed. I have cruise fitted and normaly use that on open stretches.

I do have a trailer tent and a trailer for rubish runs but not towed with it yet thats to come later.

Would say that is very good,
My average is in my sig, This is mostly town driving 2 miles to work and 2 back plus mine is an Auto.
on a recent longish run i got 28mpg.

My guess would be that you don't have a problem, but just to reassure yourself I would get underneath the car and check for diesel leaks at the fpr, the fuel filter by the rear arch and the fuel pipes near the tank.

Can you actually smell diesel leaking, when stood next to the car? If not, it's unlikely you have a leak.

If you have not done so already, change the airfilter for a brand new one, before you come to Paris. That way you'll have a better judgement of how she does on a decent run.

Cruising at 70mph is imo about the optimum speed for this vehicle. By the way, can't remember if you said yours was auto or manual (I'm guessing manual by your comments?)

Its a manal, have done full service when i got it 4 weeks ago, inclsuign fuel filter, air ils filters complete iul change did gearbox and diff oils as well.

I did have a leaing FPR so i changed it, i had a look yesterday and its all dry around the FR and the pipe work so visible leaks, also check and no leaks from fuel fileter that i can see witht e car on tick over. Also no patches on the road where its left at night excpet for the oil i no is leaking form the sump plug (dodgy washer but will do at next oil change)

Just been out to the local dump and its not half way beterrn 1/2 and 3/4 and only done 130 miles!!!

forgot to ention had a real bad smeel of deisel every time i got out until i did the fpr then now no smell, just my wife is convinced the fuel guage is moving too fast and i'm paranoid now, hoping the run to paris will be a better indication, if i get 500 miles on a tank on this run will be very happy.

170 on half a tank now done 100 on the 3/4 to the 1/2

you cant go by the fuel gauge! they dont read 100% true my td5 90 shows from full it will stay over 3/4 of a tank for close to 150 miles then go into free fall for the other 100(and some) miles (60ltr tank);)

only sure way fill the fooker up to the brim do a 100 miles or more then re-fill to brim then work out mpg/mpl from there

I have been very impressed with my 2001 automatic TD5 fuel economy. I bought my disco for pulling family caravan & moved from a 2006 ford mondeo auto petrol. The mondeo averaged weekly mixed driving town/country 24-26 mpg:doh::doh::doh: shocking put the caravan on and it was down below 20 mpg!!!!!
My disco is doing 28 mpg easily & if I am careful on a long run it can be just about the 30 mpg which I think for the size of it is amazing. With the caravan on I can keep it above the 20 mpg mark!!!
My only concern has been the amount of problems I have had with it, from sunroof leaks, fuel pressure regulator, power steering pump, starter to name just a few:doh:. Other than that I am enjoying driving her:)

That all sounds right to me.

My guess is that you didn't fill the tank enough. Take your time when you do it, fill then let the froth go down then do it again and again until you can see the level of liquid in the pipe, then you know it's full. But it does take time.

Do your run to Paris, then fill it up again until you can see the liquid - this is the only way you will get consistent accurate mpg figures.

I understand your slight paranoia, I had the same after a recent côck-up with a replacement fuel filter, but I'm starting to relax a bit now.

Stick to 70mph or 120kph on the autoroutes for good economy and don't have your aircon on, select economy.

Hi i have done the brim to brim over and over and my D2 td5 manual is doing 480 miles to a full tank so on average 120 miles per 1/4 on the gauge, it tends to go down slower when you fill her to the brim in the begining because the gauge does not measure what is in the pipe only the tank. Oh by the way this is all on the motorway. So would be interesting to know what yours does when you travel to france, please let us know.

Just brimmed it before I set off works out on where I was filling it upto first click getting 27.9mpg but after following your advice and being patient managed to get an othEr ten litres in after first click on the pump.

I will post an update from Paris tomorrow

My TD5 manual does 27 in the really cold weather, and 29/30 in fair weather. This is mostly short journys, in and around town with only about 100 miles per tank at speeds of 60 mph. ( which is my max speed in this truck ! ).

I,m anal about my fuel consumption and do a " brim to brim " calc. on every tankfull. ( increas,d fuel consumption is a very good indicator of problems ).

Them best I ever got was 32 on a run from Cambridgeshire to Wales at 60 mph on cruise.

I always get to 500 per tank at least, mostly 530 ish.( light on ). I get around 300 at the half tank mark.

I have blanked off , and removed, the EGR, have BFG All Terrain,s fitted and am as gentle as I can be on " go " pedal !.

I am going to have a remap done soon, and am hoping this will help me improve mpg further.

I have also looked into removing the viscous fan, and putting an electic one on, but my findings seem to suggest, if the viscous unit is working correctly, that the effects on mpg would be negledgable.( however this is a subject that is hottley debated ).

I will also be looking to put a decat pipe on to aid mpg.

Being keen on my mpg figures, I,m confident that I would be able to see if any of these " mods " make a differance.

Keep us posted on your mods and mpg, i hav e done egr since getting the truck full removal and have order silicon hoses and decat pipe. saving for the intercooler and full remap and turbo booster i'm looking at runnign about 2 bar 30 psi mark, i'm looking for more drive ability.

I would not say i am light footed and will always drive at 70 on the motorway, i have been trying to be more gentle around town sort shifting in lower gears and running to no more the 3000 revs.

For ease of use, i keep all my records on here,

Mileage Calculator and Vehicle's Costs Analyser

"Right now we've got 221.064 vehicles of 179.281 users. The cumulative consumption adds up to 7,9 l/100km. 2.556.798.465 km total driven distance and 202.055.869 l of gas".

How do they get .064 of a vehicle and .281 users?
Perhaps it's an index finger driving a wheel nut? Well that's hardly going to be economical with six flats is it! Surely a rounded nut would be more economical?
