Hello o wise ones.

I've had a 200tdi fitted to my 90 and I was getting about 25 miles to the gallon. I'm going to look at getting a new tranny box to improve the top speed and fuel consuption.

The rad was blocked so I got a new one. At present the thermostat is out and it's running very cold. Will running cold affect the fuel consuption as I'm guessing I'm getting 18 - 20mpg. If not, any ideas what could be causing the poor performance. The air box was off while the rad was fitted!

Thanks for the reply. The thermostat is out because the guy who fitted the radiator forgot to put it back in. I'm going to pick it up tomorrow. At present it is just not getting warm so I can't demist the screen when it rains :( I had to drive to from Leeds to Teesside last week using a squeegee to clear the screen :) He has a lock up garage full of landy bits so hopefully he'll have a tranny box. I've been told on here that changing this will improve the mpg and top speed.

Get a 200TDI Disco Tranny box if ya can ;)

I now have the thermostat in and it's registering about a quarter on the temp guage. This is still a little too cool to demist the windscreen. Is there any thing I can do to warm it up a bit more? The new rad is too efficent

I've sourced a Disco tranny box :)

Take the fan off?

I get fairly consistent 34 mpg in my 90-with-a-disco-tdi in it! Have you got the original TD rad or is it a proper one with an intercooler?

It's a defender 200tdi and I've replaced the rad with a new Britpart one. The oil cooler is the original.

Tonight it overheated while the missus was out in it. When I looked the coolant level was very low and on draining the water was mucky brown. I hope the new rad isn't blocked with crap left in the engine :(

I like the idea of taking the fan off. Cheers :)

could also be you had an airlock or that the system was filled with the heater closed and when your missus went out in it she put the heating on so dropping the level of the coolant...

If it were me I would take the radiator back off, give it a good flush then completely flush the rest of the system for a hour or so before filling it back up slowly and carefully so as to reduce the chance of airlocks...
