Ive had a quick whizz through the posts but cant find anything so excuse me if i missed any.

I've had my 2003 Defender Td5 for 2 months and have the engine takes about 10 miles to get remotely warm and therefore found the cabin heater is not over keen on the heat front and is best described as luke warm. Before i start investigating why is this normal behaviour??

I had a 200Tdi Disco some years ago with the same problems which was cured by changing the thermostat. Being a different engine i didn't know whether there are any other causes to be looked at first??

Many Thanks

The heater is the same basic design but better. Still works the same way so just try the same old techniques I.e check thermostat, clean heater matrix, replace heater bulkhead seal and duct seal if need be.

My heater was lovely and warm in the summer but luke warm at best in the winter. The cure was to replace the heater to bulkhead seal and now my heater is nice and toasty but it still takes 5 miles or so to warm up.

I use a rad muff in proper cold weather but even then my engine only runs at about 80c according to Nanocom -even when heavy towing. I have new rad, new heater matrix, and a new stat fitted. I removed the viscous fan set up and have a leccy fan that only seems to switch on in hot weather when towing. I can also manually switch it on if things seem to be getting too hot but I've yet to use it.

Thermostats can come in summer stats about 82c and winter stats 88c see if you can get a winter stat and do make sure the matrix is clean of no gunk inside back flush with a hose pipe you would be surprised at the silt that comes out and will restrict flow and heat.

Had the same problem with mine when I got it - took ages to get to running temp and then loose it again if stuck in traffic etc.

Fit a new thermostat (non genuine) but not change. Fit rad muff, removed fan which helped a little but still not great.

Finally fitted a genuine thermostate and it solved the issue straight away - now warms up within 5 miles regardless of weather with no rad muff and fan installed again!

Just maybe my TD5 runs cooler because I removed all the nasty foam/plastic sound deadening nonsense when I replaced the engine?

I did it so I could spot any leaks quickly as soon as they happen rather than wait for the foam to soak up any oil for a few months before dripping all over my driveway.
