had my disco for about a year now and it was bought as a bit of a fixer upper. after a lifetime of welding it was pressed into service but what a disapointment its been. ive had a few 200's and the missus has had a few 300's last one being an auto - which was much quicker than my current one. i was towing approx 2 ton earlier in the week and i couldnt get over 30mph? 60 unladen is my best so far!
i have been messing as i had no service with the truck. so ive fitted a new cambelt kit and found the camshaft was a tooth out! and ive done the pump tweek which resulted in approx 13mpg! oh im getting 22mpg atm? (manual btw) but i seem to have a washer missing out of the pump if that threads correct?
my first 200 drove like this and it was a split in the bottom intercooler hose - so i checked mine over for splits and delamination and i cant see any marks or damage? ive read about wastegates sticking or splitting but i cant see if mine works or not? should you be able to get it moving just by revving the throttle and watiching the gate open and close? (i have been able to move it with a prybar) or does it only work under load? any ideas chaps?

my rrc is the same, towed my new series2a lightweight on trailer and it was down to 40mph on hills.
ive checked the boost hoses to no avail. i'm going to blank the egr next, see if that helps. emptied the sedimenter last week, it had a bit of **** in it but not enough to cause a problem.

ive blanked my egr - decated it - emptied the sedimenter fitted a new lift pump nowt nothing nada!

could do with getting measurments for the pump washer to eliminate that.....

Basic diesel diagnostics;

Is there excessive smoke, colour?
Does it run up to temp ok?
Is the return fuel line hot?
How much fuel is being leaked off back to the tank at idle?
Is there excessive diesel knock?
Is the pump timing correct?

Poor performance and mpg, if the fuel and boost supply is ok, generally points to pump timing.

A tooth out on my 306 td I used to have (similar setup) produced 20mpg and very lethargic revs, low power and smoke.

if the cambelt was a tooth out, has the pump been moved to accomodate, it might want advancing to get the correct timing.
Being a tooth out would either make it smoke like a goodun, or deisel knock like anything.

yes the pump was altered to suit the cam. when i refitted the new cambelt kit i couldnt match my lockpins to the indicator markings on the casings so had to slacken off the pump vernier to get it all lined up again. after the engine turning by hand for what seemed like forever to make sure - i fired it up and it revved up extremely slow. so i advanced the pump until it sounded rough then backed off a little. revved up straight away then. it never smoked until i did the pump tweek - another reason i put it back to how i found it. i havent checked valves yet how bad were yours paul? tight or slack?

done tappets today - had a couple that were tight so altered those and re checked the lot made no difference still doing 100miles to £30 diesel.......
turbo seems to give me a kick at 2500rpm onwards but i hardly ever seem to be at 2500 unless im gunning it? any ideas?

tbh mine does 120miles to £20, not bad for an auto. i'm begining to think it maybe the bw transfer sticking as sometimes i think it ok, others it flat as a fart.

Yeah I get about 100 miles out of my auto for 20 quid. But it has no service history and i amy working through it slowly. Injectors are next on my list, they make a huge difference to mpg.

cant be arsed faffing about changing injectors on a range rover classic. either engine out, head off or wiper panel off. going to try injector cleaner straight into the fuel filter.

20 quid for 100 miles i wouldnt be too bothered - mines a manual so 30mpg+ should be easily achievable - plus mines not pulling too well makes me think i should just buy summat else smash this thing up! last run was calculated at 20.92mpg! i should of bought a v8 and gassed it!

vernier has been sorted btw !

adjusted vernier again today - advanced until it was knocking then backed off until it just stopped at tickover. still the same topped out at 60 on way home. so ive wound in low boost adjustment a full turn and took her for a spin. a few hills round here and she felt like it pulled betterer? and no smoke under load or after load so i might wind it in a little more before altering anything else on the pump.....tbc...
