Pleasure and Pain

Just got my TD5 back from the doctors after having a new head gasket, glow plugs and a injector loom.... Runs like a dream, Horray!

Now my wallet's a lot lighter...Boo !

This is one of the plastic dowels that came out of the head.

Caution all you early TD5 owners, this little plastic part can cost you an arm and a leg...

When did the TD5 engine change from plastic to metal dowels...around 2001/2002????

not sure exactly but i think it's around that time...
Maybe someone has the answer???

is it the bit between the rocker shaft and camshaft carrier?

it's a plastic head locating dowel

around 2002/2003

Battenberg. Did the garage show you the marks on the head and block where the head had been shifting? I was surprised at just how far the head could move even though it's bolted down.

I didnt see it at the time...

but i've got the old gasket, and it's evident from that the head had shifted...

Got steel dowels in now, so... touch wood!

Oh yes.

It's the fact that in many cases the symptoms don't match those of a typical head gasket failure that makes it even worse. You have already changed virtually the entire coolant system before you resign yourself to the fact that your H/G has actually gone so it ends up costing more than it should.

As a favor for my cousin, I'd towed a trailer from Birmingham to London, picked up a car, towed it to Anglesea then towed the trailer back to my mate in Birmingham.

Just as I was hitting the M42 sliproad to take the trailer back, I felt this lack of power when I dumped the throttle which just wasn't characteristic of the car. Seconds later the temp went really hot.

Gulp..!!

Drove to drop off the trailer with the heater on full blast at crawing speed, heater blowing hot and cold in airlock... feared the worst!

Limped home and took it in for a new HG... luckily no damage or warpage...

That was one 'expensive' favor.
