I've finally decided I'm really fed up of the enormous amounts of play in my 1982 110s steering box, and as it's now got to the point I have trouble keeping the thing on the road because the steering is so vague I've decided it's about time I replace the steering box.

However it's immediately obvious that these early prototype and pre production 110s and 90s were cobbled together with whatever Land Rover had lying about in the spare parts bin, and as such I've been unable to source a replacement steering box. I've had several opinions as to where my one might be from, ranging from early classic range rovers to LDV and Sherpa vans, all I know is I can't find one in the 90/110 parts catalogue so was hoping someone on here may recognize what it's from and where I can find another one!

If anybody has any idea what this might be from or where I should look to find another that would be brilliant! I want to stay with a manual box for simplicity rather than change to a power steering set up also.

Isn't that a standard RR non PAS box?

Is it? I dunno

I've tried lifting up the triangular plate and taking all the spacers out, then re fitting a washer in the hope it will clamp the lower shaft/arm a bit tighter, however all it does is make the steering column stiff to turn but there's still loads of play

Is the play actually in the box?

Yep, you can turn the column 1/2 a turn into the box before the drop arm starts to move. Means the front wheels can wander 1/2 a steering wheel turn either way when you're holding the wheel straight, quite scary when you pick up speed! :D

Mine was doing that was getting annouing kept darting off left or right

i have 3 manual boxes spare if you need one. dont know how good they are but you could take your pick. i am in the forest of dean in gloucestershire. they should be a straight swap.

Thanks a lot guys, will any manual range rover box fit then? At least now I know what to look for it should make things a bit easier :)
