Hi,

I'm a newby series 3 owner 88" hardtop 1980. Picked landy up two days ago, has driven beautifully for two days. I have discovered an intermittent problem whereby I find myself unable to select any gears! Normally this occurs on a busy roundabout or a busy junction. All of a sudden I'll be able to selct gears and off we go again as if nothing had ever happened. I suspect this maybe a clutch problem rather that a gearbox problem but does anyone have any ideas for me please?

are you sure you're disengaging the clutch properly? Not sure how heavy they are on serieses but is it just that you aren't used to the clutch? I don't mean that nastily but it is a new vehicle to you

Hi,

Yes to both. I've just been towed back form an airfield! Apparently this may well be the 'slave cylinder' on the clutch. The reservoir was nearly empty. Tried bleeding it through but still no resistance on clutch pedal. I'm going to replace the slave but could it be anything else?

well it could be the slave or master cylinders. Before you go replacing actuators and things wouldn't it be more prudent to look for a leak?

I agree, look for leaks on the pipe, look for signs of brake fluid running down the footweell, inside and out, but commonest is slave cylinder, the fluid will leak past the seals intothe bellhousing, so you won't see anything.
You can replace the seals, probably 50/50 chance of long term success, for the cost you're probably best getting a new one.

yella's right best to change both cos the extra resistance usually blows the remaining on

Assuming your clutch is OK have you tried the spring on the yellow transfer leaver that it is not weak leaving you with a box of neutrals as it tries to disengage, the same thing with the red leaver is it disengaging? Worth checking before spending.

Andy.

Thanks all, no it wasn't Abingdon it was Sywell! Better start teaching myself some basic mechanics, which is partly why I bought a landy. Ordered a new slave from Paddocks, they seen very cheap.

quick follow on question to this; i've got a similar problem - clutch fluid out the bell housing. new slave on order (yes, got the girling...). i've had a look through the ops manual, and the haynes, and i can see mostly how to do it, until they start talking about sliding back the plastic retaining clip on the push rod. in both books this is put before undoing the retaining bolts, but after removing the fluid pipe. surely the push rod is inside the bell housing at this point? i mean, i'm good and that, but not that good.
