Please Help!

I wonder if anyone can help me please. I have owned a 2002 freelander for the past year and had no problems with it. The other day I got out of the car to open the garage door and there was a really loud noise coming from the car like a fan noise but almost like a vacum cleaner but very very loud and I have never noticed this before. The vehicle is petrol 1.8.
The car had the engine still running when this noise happened. I turned the engine off and the noise went off too. I then turned the engine back on and let it run to see if it would do it again but it didnt happen again until I took the car for a long drive then it happened again. The noise sounds like a washing machine in high spin.

The air con was off. It does sound like a jet engine and it's really loud.
The only thing I can think of is that I topped up the coolant with pure water the other day and didn't use a mixture of coolant but it was only about a pint.
Could this be the fault do you think?
I have read all the threads and it's not the FBH that everybody seems to report: it's not the same noise. It does sound like the fans but at turbo speed.

Okay..........thanks to you all. This noise was indeed the fans kicking in big time since I had little coolant in the chamber. Did a 60% coolant to 40% water. Noise gone. So if anyone needs to know then there it is.

had a similar glitch in mine once. It's the two fans behind the rad, and normally they run reasonably quietly. On one occasion, they were both going full tilt, and my neighbour two drives away could hear them, and the engine management lights were on. Turned the whole thing off on the key, then restarted, all okay.

Never did it again.
