Help needed....
I have a freelander 1 1.8 that will not start.
If I take the fuel pump out and put it back in it starts briefly then dies again.
Should I just replace the fuel pump or is there anything else I should check first.

Do you hear the fuel pump running? It should run for 15 seconds when the ignition is first turned on.

If it runs, when was the filter last changed?

Hi Nodge,
No sound from pump so took it out and tried it in a bucket of fuel and it was pumping.

When it was in the bucket, how much fuel did it discharge and how fast? The pump will push fuel at a 15 litres per minute at 60 Psi.

It wasn't that fast or strong just a steady stream

In that case, it's most likely to be the filter blocked. When the filter gets clogged solid, there's often insufficient pressure available to charge the system.
This can often cause the pump to stall completely. If it's been struggling with a blocked filter for some time, then it does cause the motor to fail.
It's probably best to change the whole pump assembly, but only use an OE quality replacement. ;)

Thank you for your help Nodge.
I will order a pump this week and let you know

Hi Nodge,
The car is at my parents so will have to check after work tomorrow.
So do I just bridge the terminal where the relay goes with a bit of wire?
