please help noise on 300 tdi

i have a 1995 300 tdi and a few weeks ago a noise developed on the front right hand side of the axle . it sounded like i had run over a road cone and its getting worse . the noise comes and goes .it is more prevelent when i take foot off accelerator and the noise wont stop till i come to a rolling stop then it will come back when i drive. ive got mechanics baffled plz help.
