Hi everyone, ive recently joined your forum and have posted in the 'introduce yourself' section.
I am lost with my freelander and looking to see if anyone would be kind enough to help me out.

I bought a 2003 freelander td4 not long ago quite cheap as it would go into limp mode every so often.
I set about changing the glow plugs as part of a service but 1 snapped in the head. This was removed with the help of a glow plug extractor tool and new ones fitted.
I then started to remove the injectors to clean and inspect , snapped the cam cover in the process to a replacement was bought.
Got all injectors out and 2 were done so sourced 2 from a car breakers. Tested them and all seemed fine.
Put it all back together and it wouldnt start. cranks but wont fire up
low pressures fuel pump was replace - still the same
high pressure fuel pump regulator was replaced - still the same
in tank fuel pump seems fine , all fuses etc all checked and fine

friend hooked up a hawkeye code reader but nothing showing any codes

I'm completely lost and out of ideas

Does anyone have any advice or past experience please?

There's very little that will stop it starting. The cam sensor is a common problem, as is the high pressure regulator O rings.
There's not much else that can cause non starting really. Sometimes the MAF being faulty can stop it starting too.
If it was running, then revisit what you have touched, before it stopped starting. So make sure the high pressure regulator is plugged in and likewise with the cam sensor. ;)
 
Hi , thank you for your reply

I replaced the o ring on the replacement high pressure regulator before fitting.
The cam sensor was replaced with one from a car breakers but the connection plug seems a little loose so I will address that tomorrow.
If the MAF is faulty would it start if I unplugged the sensor?

If you replaced the pressure regulator with another one. How do you know that it's working? You could have fitted a failed part and caused the problem. Also make sure the rail pressure sensor is plugged in.
 
I might look a right numpty here (as I am REALLY not handy with mechanics) but had this problem once with a Disco 200tdi. Is there a fuel shut off solenoid on it? It was this that failed with mine.

Hi @Lignac

You would be better advised to post this in the Disco section.
But the fuel pump on a 200tdi AFAIK does have a solenoid fitted

Thanks for all the replies guys. I will try the maf unplugged tomorrow and I will perform the leak back test with the injectors as well. I will also try turning the high pressure regulator just incase that does help any.
Failing that I was thinking about taking apart the injectors to clean the needles etc properly .
Hope something of all that works

I've had a look at the fuel cut of and have stripped it and tested it and seems to work properly mate

Thanks for the help mate. I wasn't aware you could fit it the wrong way but I'm willing to try anything at the moment. I will take it off tomorrow and turn it to see it it works.

Very very true mate. I was told by the place I got it that it came off a working td4 but you are right as you can never be sure. I will see what I can do as ways to test it and see. The rail pressure sensor was a bit loose so I fitted a new clip so it held it in tighter but still no joy.

Won’t even fire with easystart? That’s odd. Are you spraying it into the inlet manifold or air intake?

My thinking was: If it starts and runs, then it suggests a leaky injector. If it just fires on easystart then dies, then it suggests cam sensor or HP reg.

Spraying it into the air intake mate. Still cranks but won't fire

Thanks mate. I will try that tomorrow as just about to head to work. Need to jump it tomorrow or take the battery out my friends car as the landy battery has went flat due to continued failed starting
