please help lost power but loads of revs?

hi
i hope you can help
i was driving tonight and accelerated as usual upto about 30-40 and then above that the revs gauge just goes up but with no power/speed increase?
it is a 2001 y reg td4 auto (think its a bmw lump)
any ideas
i have read through lots of threads but cant put finger on it
if i lift of the gas and just gently accelerate then it seems okish on a flat but up hil or slight gradiant then it just dies down in speed??

Has it just started or has it been getting slowly worse? Have you had a service (or changed the air and fuel filters in particular) recently or due one?

Check the auto-box oil level, or even better, replace it - what sort of mileage has it done.

hi it has not had any resent service not for about a year or so..
and this prob seems to have only just happened its done 106000 miles.
it seems still quite nippy up untill 30mph.i will check the auto oil if i can find it?????..
do any of you think it may be the turbo or one of the sensors??

You need to be more responsible with the upkeep, you should be checking on all fluid levels regulary, weekly is very good practice. To go a year without a service is alarming to say the least, what about the brake fluid?? glad I don't have to share the road with you.

You only have yourself to blame if the transmission is buggered.

Gud chance it is the box oil so do as GFD said above. If the auto box oil didn't fix things, go down the route of filter change. I am 99% sure it is not your turbo. Sensor maby (sum1 else on ere will know more about electrics than me) but giv the service ideas a go first. (cheap stuff first)

If your engine speed is increasing but your road speed isn't then forget about your engine.
As been mentioned before the first thing to do is check your auto box oil level, if that's OK then it's off to an auto box specialist!

Make sure you follow the correct procedure when checking the auto box level.

Better do the filters anyway as they should be done +/- oil change is due - got my old 90 back to life, but this will not fix your main problem

Markymark my Freelander has just developed exactly the same symptoms. Except mine is a 2.5litre V6 engine.

Did you get a diagnosis? In the back of my mind I have been thinking "I hope it's not the first sign of the gearbox on its way out". I'm hoping for a simple solution such an an adjustment or something.

As I have already mentioned, check your autobox oil, even better replace it, these boxes require looking after, they are not like a Discovery, they will not run for a million miles without being touched.

Hi I had this problem recently with mine same yr also auto - was the air intake filter full of junk - much better now - when was your last changed?

I live in the country in Western Australia, it's summer, it's hot and it's dusty. So the air filter query is a logical one. It was checked but not replaced at the last service, about 6000km ago, so quite likely it is due to be replaced. The transmission oil was also replaced at the last service so that is less likely to be the issue.

Your trans oil could have been replaced yesterday, it could still have leaked, check the level.

The air filter has virtually nothing to do with it infact it would cause it to lose power and not rev, if its revving like crazy and not going very quickly, on a manual about the first thing you would do would be check the clutch, an auto has a couple of clutches controlled/operated by hydraulic pressure (from the trans oil), if your trans level is low you won't have the right amount of oil lubricating the gears neither will there be the correct amount of trans oil to put the correct pressure on the clutches so you will get clutch slip, causing you to rev the engine more to achieve the same speed.

Thanks GasfiredDisco, I'll go out and check the trans oil level, sounds like good advice.

If it helps anyone, here's the page from the RAVE manual. Ignore the testbook bit (no. 4.) - unlikely that you have one - use your common sence as to how hot it is! - Use a thermometer to check temp if your doing it properly.

Just an update on the problem, my LR dealership is checking out the vehicle today, Service Manager just rang and said the problem is a blocked catalytic converter. Phew! at least it's not the transmission on the way out. He is hinting that the CC is an expensive part to replace, however, and he is looking for an after-market CC at a lower cost than LR original parts.

Just get em to knock out the contents of the cat and run it like that till the MOT. Gives yu time to save up for a new one.
