Hello Everyone, Can anybody please advise me having done some routine maintenance this morning I noticed directly behing the fan a black round plastic cover which had fell out of the front of the head, I can see the timing chain inside and I have oil spillage around that area, should this plastic disc be sealed into position or just pushed in which when I do this is very loose ?, if it should be sealed what sealant should I use ?.

Thanks for any advice given.

Sorry its a Discovery 2001 TD5 ES.

Sounds like the front camshaft oil seal. The O Ring will be hard, and thats why it is loose. Get a new one and fit it yourself. Not a hard job. I just done a search on here and TheBigLad has a step by step process you can follow.

Indeed. I fyou can get a new one rather than bodge it in with instant gasket or silicone then it would be the way forward.....unless you need to bodge it to drive the vehicle to the parts shop  then don't get that crap whizzing about the engine.. ;)

Thanks for the advice gents, ive stuck it back in with some temporary sealant only a small amount just to hold it in place. I will get one ordered now, will it be ok to still run the car or should I avoid till job done ?

Well, you know the problem is there, so assuming you'll check before you begin a journey and then during or after the journey you'd be fine I reckon.
