This is the first time I've heard of such a problem.

As you suggest it's probably an internal fault in the cooler.

The drive train set up is designed to be suitable for climates from the Arctic Circle to the Sahara Desert so I would reckon that an IRD in the UK would manage fine without being cooled at all over the winter.

Spot on ;) I expect in the UK the IRD is heated by coolant rather than the other way round!!

Just to clear up the clear water...........the car had pushed out the anti freeze/oil from the breather and i just topped up the expansion tank with clear water this morning before starting the car in an attempt to see if i could see anything wrong. Although there is oil in the expansion tank i feel that this is from the IRD as opposed to the engine as the engine oil is still at the same level is still clean and no sign of mixture with water.
