Pinching a TD5?

I periodically read about folks having their TD5s pinched and wonder...

The TD5 alarm/key combination seems reasonably secure, so how are the tea leaves taking them away?
 
stolen to order cars are nicked by using a rolling code transmitter that will fool the reciever of the immobiliser signal that the chip is present. expensive piece of kit but surprisingly easy to get hold of and use
 
i know but i'm not going to say on here am i now? and yes i learnt by legitamate means! suffice to say, if they want it, they'll have it and the way its done doesn't take long at all. i think a rottweiller and 12 gauge is the best means of protecting a defender cos land rover can't think of anything.
 
I'm curious as to the methods used in pinching a TD5, purely because i'd like to figure a way out of making it harder to have one pinched.

If all the "normal" methods of taking a TD5 involve fooling the ecu that a valid key is present and starting the car, then perhaps isolating the inductive loop for the keyfob, and shunting it to ground would defeat that approach?

Just fit an extra immobaliser or alarm system to add to the deterant.

Well I've been thinking... if the handbrake locks the gear box, why aren't there any security solutions out there that simply lock the handbrake?

Or better still, have a removable handbrake sort of thing going on.

There are handbrake\gear-lever locks for saloon cars... but the handbrake\gear stick location on Defenders is a bit awkward to accomodate this... I don't have one (nor a defender come to that) but it doesn't look like it would work.

I would have through one of those coupled with a full steerling lock would make your beloved nigh on un-nickable?
 
They should employ the same security that Saab has. Once the ignition off and key is out, the gearbox is locked in reverse. Anybody tries to nick it, then gearbox is ****ed.

A few years back there was a company that did the handbrake lock, where the change the whole "base" bit (that bolts to the seatbox) and there was a barrel lock that hend the handbrake "on"...... trouble is, the handbrake cable was still standard, so unless you armoured it up, then you could chop through it with some bolt croppers.

The Mech Lock from mudstuff looks good, they show just the "clutch" version, but there is also a "clutch & brake" version, but due to our stupid laws, you can't immobilise the brake system, even with a quality product, so the gov't are allowing vehicles to be taken :rolleyes: (Still, if you fitted it well and hid it properly with decent brake pipes, then i couldn't see an MoT person really noticing it anyway)
 
I've done some playing with a pic, a keypad and some relays and have a basic system that will not allow the engine to start unless the correct code is entered, but there's still the tow away element to contend with.
