With or without a lift max is 205/80/16 or 215/80/16 any bigger and regardless of havin to cut wheel arches you then run into gearing problems...poss says but really couldnt be assed readin whole thread but if on 1.8 then even with above sizes you will find it will struggle on hills...motorways etc
 
I have 235/65-R17 on mine Open Air. On 16" rims, I think 235/70 will be enough.

205/80/16's will just fit without spacers, but only just, mine came very close to the bottom spring cup on the strut & on full lock very slightly rubbed against the plastic inner wing, fitted 30mm spacers & now I can just about get a finger between the tyre & the strut :eek:. Even at this modest increase in size it is really noticeable in 5th, it is not much better than an overdrive in my TD4 manual, will be switching them to my TD4 Auto this afternoon, it will be interesting to see if it makes a difference to the Auto.
