Dropping the rear axle & springs isn't a bad job. Just always make sure the chassis is secure and isn't going anywhere.

Best bet is to have wheels on hubs, block up the rear of the chassis (just before rear springs start) and then remove the springs from their hangers & take off the shocks, then simply roll the rear axle & springs as one piece out from under the chassis. Then block the chassis from under the rear crossmember. Shackle bolts may be hard work, chuck loads of WD on them over night and again in the morning, you can't grind them off the shackle plates as their threaded bolts & plates - so just keep on at them with a decent socket and a nice long length of bar!

in addition, make sure all the wheel nuts are removable before pulling the axle out.
its a right **** when its out and you want to strip it down and cant undo the bloody nuts!

ok thanks for the advice lads, going to give that a go tomorrow, i have actually started to paint the chassis but in small bits at a time and i am quiet impressed with this rust and sealer and primer i have, not sure how long it will last or how good it is but goes on very well.
no pictures today has i had a short day and had to rush out and get my eyes tested, her indoors thinks i should have had my head tested instead lol

well rain stopped play today, couldnt do any painting so just undid bolts etc, coated in penetrating oil, removed exhaust and a few other bits before going indoors to get warm.

ok its been a while since i updated, not much has happened really, having to try and get fences built, shed, tidy garden, hospital and finances have all contributed to me not getting very much done. photos are in no order, lots of them - the chasis has been part painted with vatacan rust/primer etc with no overcoat has yet, also the petrol tank is only the vatacan stuff which i can highly recommend.






















decided that there is no time frame for getting it finished and on the road, it will be when it will be, taking everything back to bare metal and starting again and hopefully do a better paint job and repairs than the last owners. colour scheme is now (or should i say for now) decided on limestone with black trim on the outside and reverse that on the inside, the engine bay black with engine and gearbox red, the wheel rims in limestone but unsure on colour for axles.

Looks like you have yours in more bits then mine, do you ever look at them and think "will this ever go back together" i do lol.

Looking good though mate, keep pressing on.

lol niel you should have seen it before i tidied it up, her indoors is going nuts with me but hey as long as it keeps her happy lol.... in no rush at all for the steps as you can see from my updates lol.....

well finally managed to upload an update, quiet a bit has been done since last update and i am now out of my comfort zone (official) continually searching net, forums and all my books and mags.

quick breakdown from last time, front axle off and almost stripped and parts primed, gone right down to bare clean metal, found that i am going to need a couple of swivel ball joints (unless i try fix with some of the methods thrown my way). really strugling to get some bolts off to allow the swivel to come out but i will keep going with it.

the engine is out but not stripped or painted or in an ideal position to work on (under the chasis) until i can clear some space somewhere.

steering rods and column out. quick grind down to bare metal (not taken track rod ends off yet as going to wait till i order some new ones)

continued with the grinding down of the chassis, some painting done but lots more grinding to be done and then i can see what and where needs welding...

colour scheme chosen (well for this month anyways) Limestone, black with copper engine and axles, chassis black. yuk dont do it i hear you all say..... bollox lol

Once those front hubs are apart - have you replaced the swivels ? - those ones are utterly fooked !

no not replaced the swivels yet, someone recommended varnish but not sure about that, think while they are off will replace with new ones and put some leather socks on them to protect a little bit better - its an expense that i had not budgeted for even with my small extra pot..... going to have to do some real crawling with the other half this next month lol.....

Nah, don't bodge, replace fella.....it's worth the expense, dude
