off to pick up a disco 1 for the wife tomorrow night.

300tdi auto which doesnt start but has mot until august. I am hoping its something daft like the spider or what not. I presume I can just run a positive to the fuel pump solenoid to bypass this?

Its a 1997 reg. Ive tried reading up on it but theres quite a bit of information and I am bloody confused now haha

Thats what I done to my last one (manual 1996) and it worked fine.

If I am recovering it home do i need to remove the propshafts to protect the transmission? Ive never recovered an auto before.

I have read some many threads with differing opinions, I feel I shouldn't reply (I'm no mechanic!)

But as i understand, you shouldn't allow drive into an autobox without the engine running as the pump will not be moving the oil around.

But if the transfer box is in natural (which is connected to both prop's) surely no drive cannot get into the autobox?

Check with an expert, but thats my uneducated theory.
Hope it turns out to be a good'en.

Ok you can tow but put both boxes into neutral, I towed a RRc once from Wales to South London via the M4 at speed with out any probs.
Only 300autos with EDC don't have the spider immobiliser that's 96MY onwards. as for a fuel cutoff I believe only petrol engines have that, as for starting... the safe option is in P with the brakes on, I'm sure u would know that if u have driving autos.

Both boxes in neutral is ok to tow back. Id the symbol on dash showing it is the immobiliser. I bypassed mine the other week white wire behind ignition to fuel pump and red white wire to the starter relay.

im hoping its something simple like that and not the timing belt snapped.

It would be most satisfying to fix it in 5 minutes and drive it away :)

If it has EDC, IIRC, it won't have the infamous spider. It may be a late non EDC ( I hope so ), in which case a positive to the pump solenoid should turn the fuel on. If it is EDC, then, IMO, chuck the EDC in the bin - best place for it. Then set up your pump better than LR did, and get some power back... ( an improve your MPG too, if your wife drives sensibly.....

This is my experience too - if you can turn all the wheels at the same rate - I.E. by towing, then no need to remove either propshaft. Put both boxes in neutral and it should be fine.

If it is an EDC then don't forget if it's been run on veg (most just think it's a 300 so will run veg) the shaft may have snapped.

But you're a veg runner so probably know this already.

Having read quite a few threads on EDC's not starting I do hope its not one

Me Too!! I wouldn't wish it on anyone. ( biggest problem is non availability of spares - like number 4 injector - which Bosch stopped making 8 years ago!)

But, there is a cure for EDC, and its not too bad a job...

Well its back home after 65 miles of a framing behind a gutless defender haha. Took 2.5 hrs to get it home.

It is an edc
