Bu993r!!!

I have just gone through the rigmorole of changing a leaking P gasket in a disco 1 300TDi. I changed the water pump gasket while I was at it. all surfaces thoroughly cleaned and smeared with sealant. Bled the system of air and chucked in half a ton of antifreeze.

All was fine but have just come back from a run round the block to see it piddling all over the floor.

The leak would appear to be coming from the area of the top long bolt that goes right through the casing and holds the top of the alternator in position.

Any (helpful) ideas appreciated as this is now renering me transportless until I can solve the leak  as it is worse then when I started.

??????????

it is possible for housing to be warped ,but i would expect water pump gasket ,i have seen some pumps warp when hot

It wasn't leaking there before I started, James. So I must assume it is my fitting / refitting  I shall go and shear a few nuts in the morning and see if I can fit it tighter

I suspect it's the water pump - it was new 8 months or so ago.... Should I just crank up the bolts tighter do you think?

Got to be worth trying but dont overdo it!

Someone was on about this the other day......something to do with just pinching up the bolts, running until engine warm, allowing to cool and then torquing up

dont forget to ensure the bolt shanks are well covered in Copaslip, so they dont seize in place.
Yu never know when they may need to come out again .

Your right you know, the bolts can stretch on the threads and when they contract when cool, the gasket leaks, tis a bugger.

obviously where he was going wrong

*snigger*......obviously

Was taught most of what I know about horses from a old Irish traveller......When I'd try to impress him with something I thought I knew he'd say ''And where'du learn dat den''

Usually I'd read it somewhere and he'd smile, shake his head and say ''Ahhhh......book knowledge''
