Hi lads & lassies, my name is Andy, just joined.
My daughter runs about in a 07 Freelander 2 TD4, which stopped working a couple of days ago, ( message was hdc not available), wouldn't turn over, NADA.
However, she called out the RAC,who plugged in his obd doofer, and he didn't get a reading, suggesting the ECU was goosed.
Being a canny Scot and not keen on a bill of 4figured, I thought it might be an idea to root about.
Step 1. Check battery.
Step 2. Direct feed from battery to starter, ignition on, engine turned over, no start.
Step 3, ignition on, listen for fuel pump, nowt.
Step 4, check fuses. Under bonnet, all good.
In passenger footwell, turns out the obd2 fuse was knackered. ( I'll give the theory why in a mo). Replaced the fuse, bingo!! Car started literally off the button, still got the check engine light, but chances are that'll clear with a coder.
OK, down to theory. I noticed that the obd2 plug was a replacement, and the wires were not particularly well connected, now sorted.
Also, the plug wasn't mounted where it should be, again, sorted.
I reckon dear daughter has caught it with her foot, caused a short, and Bob was your mum's brother.
So, before you pour money trying to get the car fixed, check the simple stuff first. £1.00 for a pack of mixed fuses against potentially £1000+ parts and labour, a no brainer really...
