PG1 box

so - one for you Clutchdust. if the 1.8 uses a pg1 box - and so does the Rover 220Turbo - it should bolt in easy - well easy for a Hippo - shdnt it?

wot ECU etc do you think would be best, would the 1.8 petrol mems/ecu /etc cope with the 220 lump?

just getting to grips with wots required...

The mounting holes on the bell housings are different. I'm sure i wrote about this before. I have a 0 mile PG1 bellhousing in the shed if you intend to fit a T series lump.
 
You also have to bear in mind that a 220 box wont work straight out of a 'car' as there is not the clearence in the input part of the gearbox differential.

You would have to swap the diff over (Which i also have a 0 miler) in my shed.

Hindsight would be great - I stripped a 0 mile freelander PG1 to repair my 154,000 220 box. Wished I'd saved for when my current box needs replacing!!

Loom would have to be renewed - im breaking a complete 220 so you could obtain the loom etc (or complete lump) if you wished to do so.

I spose I need to "borrow" a Hippo and a 220 bellhousing, to see where the holes are different - hopefully they can be re-drilled. If not, you are saying that it would fit if the bell housings were swapped - i spose?
If I get a 220turbo lump with bellhousing - that would fit?
Can the 1.8 or diesel come in auto mode? coz I have a Jatco box, so would consider putting the 220 into mine, however I think the electronics wud be horrendous?????

I did exactly the reverse. Swapped the bellhousing and diff for the T series ones and got my car going. (I then swapped the K series bellhousing for a T series one) An enthusiast broke a 220 Turbo gearbox (with torsen diff), used the k series bellhousing and mated up to a 1.8 for a kit car.

I have no experience with the jatco box - sorry :(

There are definate differences as the kit car guy could not get the box to fit in 220 format.

Its easy to split, swap, reseal with RTV and then torque up.

I was tempted to put my 220 engine into my hippo, but decided to keep standard (or to LR spec at least)

i woz hoping to fit the 220 engine (and bellhousing, clutch etc) to the Hippo box - that wud mean still 4wd :). otherwise go for a 2wd 220Turbo (which comes with a LS diff - i believe)

Th first bit would work fine.

The 220 option wont work as the IRD splined take off shaft wont fit the 220 standard or torsen diff.

Nope :)

I repaired my R 220 gearbox using freelander gear clusters and casing (not bellhousing side)

Bought a freelander gearbox as a spare years ago (way before thoughts of actual freelander ownership). When the bearings failed in the 220 box, I thought it would be a straight swap. Thats why I had to strip and partially rebuild the original.

The L series diesel uses the PG1 gearbox.

is the diesel box stronger than the petrol - cos the torque is much more on the diesel and it needs to take the power of the 220.

is the box man enuf?

You have got me there!!

I really can't answer that as I'm not sure. Would be interesting to know in case I ever have to rebuild my hippo's 'box.
