when i got my series it had a very strong petrol smell inside, further investigation pointed to the filler to tank hose was well gone,i replaced this and the smaller breather tube along with proper clips at all connections, the smell went so that was sorted,on my modern van i have no hesitation filling until the forecourt pump clicks as the nozzle is in the fuel,ie i brim my van with diesel with no safety concerns at all,
my query is this advisable with my series as i estimate the reinforced rubber filler hose prob holds 2 ltrs of petrol and its proximity to the rear seat area?,

Those rubber filler neck hoses are a pain, mine leaked when I bought the vehicle and as soon as I tried filling it up on the way home, petrol leaked all over the fourcourt. I've replaced the hose and clips but it has started to leak again when I fill it. If I was you, I wouldn't fill it to the brim, even if the hose is good, the filler caps are hardly airtight and petrol will splash out when you corner.

I never fill into the hose on old cars, it perishes, cracks and gets porous. Well known problem, a lot of old cars have tank under boot and a rubber tube up to the rear wing top, very easy to fill the boot with petrol.
