Hi All,
In another thread (Whine, whine, whine) I’m getting that sorted. In the meantime I’m going to do the service - usual things, oil, air, fuel filters and fluids, oil, diff, gearbox. My question is rather than replace the crankcase breather with another, do the ‘upgrade’ to a supposedly fit ‘n’ forget separator.
Anyone done this and if so has it been all it promised?
Cheers,
Michael.

It's been reccomended to keep original filter and replace every couple of years, the theory is what it would filter gets put back into the engine. Easy to get too when also changing air filter.

Hi J_D,
Thanks, since putting the post up I’ve seen a thread via Google not the search function. That thread said the same as you. Won’t bother with ‘upgrade’ after all.
Cheers,
Michael.

Cheers Jayridium,
I think there’s a consensus appearing here. Plus another thread I found elsewhere. I’ve ordered the white filter.

This upgrade wasn't anything to do with improving the engine, it wasn't even an LR thing.
BMW introduced this on their own vehicles to reduce service times in the workshops. It also addressed many issues of oil blowing out the dipstick, where the original filter change was missed.
By installing the cyclonic separator, there's no need to replace the fluffy filter at the same time as the oil filter, however more oil gets into the intake as a result, which simply clogs the intake manifold faster, if the EGR is still functioning.
Oil loss also increases with the cyclonic separator, when compared to the fluffy filter.

Any recommendations for engine oil, before I go and get some. The last time I did my own servicing was in the late 80’s….!!
