I have a Defender TD5 XS 2004. While on holiday last week-noticed that the lock in the front passenger door handle is missing. The 2 middle handles have blanking plugs and the driver handle has the normal key thingy. Now my question is- should the front passenger door have a key bit or a blanking plug? Cant seem to remember what was in it before. Also wondering if it just fell out, as landies are prone to do- or did some blighter try to gain access ?
 
They should definitely be there and they don't normally (someone could correct me!) just fall out so I would guess there may have been some shenanigans! time for a security overhaul, me thinks; steering, pedal, gear stick locks wouldn't go amiss!
 
This is the funny thing, I have a Disc lock and a clutch claw. Even if they had got in- it would have taken them quite a while to get all that off.

I suppose I will have to get the lock from a dealer ? Or is there a cheaper way ? Any advice appreciated.
 
if it's just the barrel, then there are plenty of cheap or expensive replacements online. you may end up with a different key for each door unless you replace them all!

they may not have spotted them straight away!
 
I have contacted Paddock as they advise me that I will have to get lock barrel from Main Landrover dealers.
Any cheaper way of doing this ? Also would not really like to have to change the other doors and the ignition lock. Mult. keys also seem a pain.

if you want to use the same keys, then I guess that would eb the way to go, otherwise you can buy a full set of lock barrels for less than £20, i.e. http://r.ebay.com/Oa7sQB
 
Thanks for that. It has central locking. Just to confuse the issue, I have looked at 2 Defenders in the village and neither of them have a lock barrel in the front passenger door handle- just a blanking plug. Landrover dealer was no help.

I have a Defender TD5 90 XS, the same year 2004, the passenger door lock is not there, as it has central locking, there is a key barrel on drivers door only. Picture of my passenger door handle.

the only problem i can see is if the drivers lock fails, you have no other option. To have a passenger lock would then be useful, if it didn't set off the alarms!! it would, however allow another method of entry for the undesirables :(. If you only want a second entry point in case of primary lock failure, or key loss, then any suitable lock and key would suffice for the passenger side.
 
Just checked and there is a key barrel lock on the rear door, (tailgate) so it has a second key entry point, you would need central locking to fail or a completely flat battery and the drivers barrel to fail before needing to gain entry via the rear though.
 
Does anybody know where I can buy the blanking plug? Both Paddocks and Dealers only sell the whole handle. Might have to try breakers. Does anybody know of a breaker that has many landrovers? Could get them to post it if not available locally in Oxford.
