hi guys
stripped front of engine to do timing chain - it dont look a bit like the manual!

here are piccies of wat i got - according to manual I shud have a ratchet and pawl adjuster mechanism - which this obviously aint. Any clues - it is supposed to be a 2.5 defender petrol lump (1985). It could, of course be a later lump - or summat quite different.

check your engine number..if its starts with 11h then its a 2.3
Dont check the log book, look on the engine.

The manuil sez they are both the same except a diff crank - so cant tell that easily.
not sure wot a view of the rocker cover will achieve either, Yella.
I shd have posted the engine number tho - it is 17HC41030.

Thanks fur ya help, folks.

Problem resolved - thanks guys for info and feedback.
it appears (small supplement to manual) that the 2.25 and 2.5 have different timing chain adjusters. I have posted pics below. the ratchet and pawl version is for the 2.25 engine - the block type is for the 2.5 engine.
Also for your info, the method of determining a worn chain is -

2.3 engine
If the last tooth of the ratchet is engaged in the pawl (1in pic) the chain is excessively worn and should be discarded.

2.5 engine
The timing chain tensioner check dimension (A in pic) with a new chain and sprockets shd be 14,22mm (0.5in) approx. - for a fully worn chain is 27mm (1.06in).
now onto next jobby!
