Hi Guys,

Am new to this forum, so firstly Hello. I recently bought a 1992 90 200tdi as a fix up project/toy!. Its fine to drive and with a little work I got it MOT'd+road legal, even though its not fully 'off roaded' yet I want to improve the aesthetics a little, as it definitely was a work horse to the previous owner, I have done everything in house so far and want to keep it that way as I really enjoy working on it.

Today I have been filling all the dents and blemishes, sanding it down and priming the areas I have worked on. I am now in a position where I need to paint the landi and here's where the reason of the thread comes in! Whats the best and most economical way of getting a good tough finish that you can do your self? This guy came up on Google Land Rover Paint and the finish looks great with step by step descriptions of how he takes an old series and turns it into a beautiful landi...... but its obvious he really knows what he's doing when it comes to pro paint jobs, which I don't have a clue about!

Just throwing out there to see how other enthusiast have turned second hand work horses into to tidy looking landi's themselves at home with no real pro help? Is Hammerite a possible way forward to paint a land rover?would it look very DIY, not leave a smooth finish and eventually chip? would you properly strip and re spray? Any tips, products or info would be gratefully gratefully received.

Thanks for your time

You have a few options, water based or 2 pack. i usually paint with 2 pack after using an acid etch primer. but this will depend on air fed mask, enviroment and if you can paint. if not, use water based as if you get a run you can dry it off quite easy with a blow gun and rubb it down quite quickly. if you have no idea what your doing try and find someone local who would paint it if you do all the preparation to keep the cost down. good luck

or synthetic;)

Thanks for your quick replies chaps, as I thought not as easy as a tub of Hammerite!

Right, with regards to 2 pack, waterbase and synthetic where would I go about getting these? I have heard lots about etching primer this is this because I'd be painting aluminum not steel? I have access to compressors and spray guns and I could get hold of charcoal filtered masks NOT air, am I asking for bronchitis and hardener on the lungs if I do this!?! I hear thats no fun at all.... Have toyed with the idea of trying to make a spray booth with a large tent getting a storage heater to supply heat etc, have been advised that without extraction the over spray would settle on the fresh paint resulting in frustrating consequences!?

Will try and price up a self prep paint job, I might have to admit defeat! Have just been scheming the idea for a month or so now and wanted to run it by someone as to how feasible it was.....

it will pend on whats it painted wi now, as if synthetic you could not spray cellulose on( but thats harder to get now) use an isolator on feathered areas and a high build primer if it sinks. usually can find a local motor factor that mixes, ebay etc

2 pack, thnners, hardner, use a high biuld as your body work will be rougher than you origionally thought before you rubbed it down,.

Interesting read Ted, thanks for the link. Have been picking peoples brains at work and did not realise how many people I know have painted vehicles! have a much better idea of how to go about it now from these threads+talking with people, will take some pics and eventually post. the prep has commenced have bought sand paper + said good bye to my finger tips!
Watch this space....
