There are certain genetic mutations which impair 'judgement'. Anyone who 'knowingly' buys a Range Rover has obviously inherited that gene.

I work with people with 'troubles' and they would, to a man, buy a Range Rover. Come on, go with evolution and see that p38s are Fred Flintstone.

Modern Range Rovers are NO BETTER! LEAKING ROOVES and 'mind of their own' steering columns! RANGE ROVER ARE RUBBISH!

Even 'Top Gear' said that Range Rover have to limit the speed, 'cos the tyres can't handle the power!!!! ' WHAT? Will you take me to a monkey town? Will you take me to a monkey town.. Range Rover is MONKEY TOWN!

I used to admire Range Rovers and thought that if I ever owned one, I'd made it...SILLY BOY!!! Pillock wagons. Get a Suzuki Jimny 4x4 You won't regret it!

If you want simple, fuss and trouble free day to day A to Z transport then why the hell buy a near 20 year old technology laiden vehicle like the P38.

Leave them to the folk that and respect enjoy them and are willing to learn, live with and understand their aging shortcomings and foibles.

I happen to make my living producing kit specificaly to help thoise willing to love and live with the P38, warts and all.

If you are stupid enough to imagine you can own one of these near 20 Year old legends without getting your hands dirty or learning how to accomodate and work with it's aging short fallings yourself and hoping that you can look away while your local dealer and a cheque book will do, then that's your first real problem right there.

I must say, when I feel ****ed of with life / wife / P38, its great to come and read numpty comments and well deserved abuse.

I bought my P38 (BMW 2.5td)7 weeks ago and got stung by a **** near Sheffield. Overheated like f**k. Lots of postings and great replies on here confirmed a knackered head. I have changed rad, visc, water pump and stat just to be sure and guess what - it still overheats! (would have needed to change them all anyway to make sure the next head did not screw up) Have tracked down a good deal on remanufactured head (Bridge Heads, Manachester) Looking for someone local to fit (time and unfamiliar with BMW engines so, sorry guys, this ones a cheque book fix) but you know what? despite only being able to drive 10 miles (with no hills) I love it, I will get it sorted, and I will be keeping it.
So if you dont like your P38, get shut and shut up. If your P38 ****es you off, come here, whing, get abuse, laugh, get over it.

Anyone know someone good in North Wales to fit my head....?
 
I think someone who buys a car like this and expect trouble free motoring is silly or just not done any research in to the vehicle. I have problems and come here to get and perhaps give help. But I think all been said above...
So sell the car and good bye....
Get a little shopping trolly for yourself.
 
I really must agree with BBS coments -
if you think a 20 year old P38 is expensive to run and fix try getting a 1996 jeep cherokee through its MOT without a cutting torch, or see what an alternator costs for an Isuzu trooper diesel, and then see what absolutely undrivable gear changes and symptoms you get from a trooper diesel auto with a slightly dodgey speedo sensor - which will also cost you a bl**dy fortune to replace.

Come on guys - if you are not willing to handle the problems of a 20 year old high spec motor chop it in against a 18 mont old megane and see what truely cr*p electrics are really like.

By the way I have both, I will never have a renault again ..... but will defo have another Rangie but only when the P38 succumbs to the dreaded tin worm - which brilliantly they seem very resistant to - better than discos? - nobody ever seems to comment on that aspect - BTW compare that to a Jeep...
 
Hi. Its great to see people still replying to a thread i posted 2 years ago. I know I ranted on a bit but when you spent somewhere around £4000 reparing a car that is too valuable to scrap but you know your doing your money it does gert irritating. I notice from some of the replies that Im not alone with this problem. 23 months now I have owned a 2001 Vectra (boo all you like :)) and so far I have bought a battery.......ands thats it. You will all stick up for your Rangeys but many will know in the back of your mind you will be agreeing with me.

if you choose a (poor) repmobile over a P38 its sad.

Problems and all the P38 is a class act.

As mine is coming up to 300k and has probably travelled more "off" tarmac than on, I feel qualified to agree the if you can find a better manual diesel that is bush fixable, I`ll buy it. Til then do`nt whinge about getting ripped off when it was your own fault........
 
I loved reading this thread and I love driving my P38. Not sure I loved paying the bill for a rear axle and VC rebuild though! You just gotta take it on the chin I guess but with petrol at about 37p a litre here I suppose its swings and roundabouts and it did feel good leaving the Proton Wira hire car to get back into my Rangey!:)
 
My P38 has got problems before i've even picked it up. Is this a record?

Haven't even seen the bloody thing yet but got a call today!!

Previous, previous keeper has bodged it...thanks to the current owner for letting me know, a lot of peeps would keep quiet...appreciate it matey!
 
I agree...you did rant on a bit....BUT...you miss the rangie cos after 2 years you're still here...ranting..:p
unfortunately im still getting emails telling me someone has replied to my thread and i dont know how to stop them . Im sympathising not ranting. You all seem to be 'justifying' your cars. it was hard for me to get rid of mine (after 15 years of RRs) but if nothing else im financially far better of although the local petrol garage went skint :)D).

Where I wonder can you find a 20 year old P38? Mines late 2000 so 10 years old in November. It's not as reliable a Pajero or a Volvo which is sad, but it's a lot more comfortable, easier and cheaper to fix and it's economical (diesel) I can't think of any car I would prefer to have that could do what my Rangie does:D
