Hi, I hope someone can help me on here. My Dad is pulling his hair out (what little he has) over an issue with his Range Rover cold starting.
When he comes to it in the morning to start it, he turns the ignition on and waits for the glow plug light to go out, but when he tries to start the car it turns over but will not fire. If he tries 3 or 4 times it will just manage to fire.

He has changed all 6 glow plugs but the problem remains the same. Once the car is warm there is not problem. It is a 1996 P38A 2.5 DT Range Rover.

Does anyone have any ideas. Anything would be appreiciated.

Thankyou.

I think you will find this problem is caused by fuel draining back to the fuel tank overnight. Fit a good quality anti-return valve to the fuel supply line as close to the injection pump as you can, also try and keep at least half a tank of fuel in her at all times. You should find this helps. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Also check the injetor leak off pipes.

I had the same starting problem, either crank the engine for 20-30 seconds or give it 4 heats on the key before it would start.

I thought the in-tank fuel pump had given up again but that normally gives poor running and/or engine dying due to lack of fuel pressure. Plus my fuel pump was changed less than 6000 miles ago and there was no bubbles in the fuel line from the filter.

To check the leak off pipes remove the top engine cover and look for wetness around the injectors and the leak off pipes. I was shocked to find diesel in No1, 2 and 3 injector pockets . On closer inspection the braided hoses for the leak off pipes were perished. I used some small bore fuel pipe to replace them (until i get the correct pipes) and hey presto it starts first turn of the key, hot or cold.
