Long time TD5 Defender owner...I have taken the plunge and picked up what I hope is a "nice" P38A as a best toy. Turner engined and Ashcroft refurbished gearbox and diffs. A lot of invoices, I feel for the previous owner.

Having done nothing for the last few days but read up on all the potential pitfalls of this lovely vehicle, and bearing in mind the fact that the dealer kept on mentioning battery drain on some vehicles I have been trying to find a suitable solar charger.

Can someone point me in the right direction. Minimum wattage/amp required? I understand the need for a regulator....Deltran does a nice one with it all built in but only available in the States?

I do have access to power so could just attach a mains Deltran (got one on the bike) but that may be OTT?

Gadget

I use one on my L322 when I leave it for a month 3 times a year, made by ring, model rsp600. It's 6 watts , 343 mA at its max. It's worked a treat. Before I got it, it was flat battery time every time I came home .

Check which rf receiver you have fitted there are three different ones for the p38 the last one was supposed to stop interference keeping the becm awake and draining the battery you can get them new but are over £200, if you haven't got the latest and don't want to spend that sort off money do this
https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/rf-reciever-work-round.258096/ and you many not need a solar panel and stops anything waking it up, these are the different ones fitted

the one on the right is the best one and the expensive one easy to spot as it has a board at right angles to the main board, if you don't know where its located its under drivers side parcel shelf support.

or just disconnect the antenna, and use the fob next to the side rear window ;) Mine started to go flat about six months after purchase . . . . .my guess is somebody(s) in the area added some RF gadget(s).

Now the battery stays charged for several weeks without use. Only real problems I have is one side of Wickes car park due to local GSM fill-in transmitter, and Sky Osterley visitors car park. In both cases the RF interference is so strong that the Fob no longer works. Luckly it does this before locking the car, so I use the key in these two locations !!!

BUT one day I might get around to buying the proper receiver . . . .

Thanks for the quick replies. Checked through the invoices and lo and behold the last owner fitted YWY500170....that's one less worry. I will monitor the battery and see what happens over the next few days. Will check that solar charger anyway as it will be sitting for a while.....thanks all.

Time to read the manual.
