P38 Wheelwell Capacity??

My road tyres will be up for replacement soon, and was thinking of switching from 255/65x16's to 265/70/16's instead, but suddenly occured to me that they might not fit in the spare wheelwell. Anyone any experience of getting bigger tyres in there?

I just serviced a P38 with 20" wheels/tyres and the spare could not be removed unless I let the tyre down..not much use in the case of a puncture.
I would think the 16" should be ok, why not take a ride down to the tyre place with an empty wheel well and drop just the tyre in to see how it fits ???
