What aren`t you sure about? Whether it`s a Diesel?? Or whether you got a faulty water pump? Assuming this ain`t a wind-up it`s all covered in RAVE but it says radiator out (includes oil cooler pipes if manual, and viscous fan off) then unbolt unit & use 2X8mm bolts as extractors.

The procedure in RAVE is good, (downloadable in the forums), although it can be done without removing rad if you have small hands, and a rad in good condition that won't disintergrate on contact; however it is actually easier and probably ultimately quicker to follow the book. Having done mine a couple of months ago I have a few of particular bits of advice....

  • get a proper viscous fan tool set (fairly cheap on ebay) I spent hours trying to do it with standard spanners etc.
  • once you've got the fan off (mine was very solid) use coppergrease when you put it back on
  • when buying your replacement pump make sure you get one with a metal impeller, mine had the original plastic one which I found in a pile of pieces when I opened it up, thus explaining the blown apart radiator! (I got a metal one from Motor Parts Direct for about £50 inc vat, although they may use different suppliers so ask specfically for metal)
  • where RAVE says to torque up the pump bolts to just 7lbft they mean it, anymore distorts the seal and you get a leak, and you need another new seal! (I had to get a smaller torque wrench as mine only went down to 15)
  • as the gearbox oil cooler is built into the bottom of the rad you'll have to disconnect it to remove the rad, in the process you'll loose some fluid before you can plug the hoses, so have some new fluid to hand to top up the box when you reconnect it all

:5bhurray:Good luck, although it sounds tricky it's not too difficult if you take it steady.

just looking at an old thead (waterpump replacment) i'm doing mine at the moment and am having problems getting a seal for it over here. ive got some paper gasget in the shed, will this work?. i'll have to bild it up in layers, paper is very thin and the gap is about 3cm. dont wont to start without the nod from the forum.

If you have a 3cm gap, you gonna need more than a gasket :D:D:D

Even a 3mm gap is excessive!...

When I fitted mine to the L322, I used the paper gasket it came with plus a liquid gasket (one, to hold the paper gasket in place on fitment to stop it moving and two, to make sure it sealed :D)

If you have quite a gap, time to start thinking!

its more like 1.5cm. feels like more with the tips of my fingers. may well be inch's without a proper seal. having problems finding one over here. looks like a trip to the dealers again.

eBay or gasket seal but As saint says there should be no gap between the two faces !if your pump is like the one in the photo not in a diesel tho they are differant
