looking to buy a 1998 p38 4.6 with faulty waterpump
does the cambelt have to be removed to change the pump or can it be done without removing it

thanks in advance

I wouldn't consider buying a P38 V8 with cooling system problems, even "JUST A WATER PUMP".

If I was selling it, considering the cost/time involved to replace the water pump before putting the vehicle up for sale, I'd repair it then ask the full price not a knock down price.

Sounds like a money pit to me......

:welcome2: But I agree, a water pump will cost from £25 - £50, why would anyone want to sell an otherwise good car to save that sort of money.
If you are determined to go ahead download RAVE and check out how to do it but first do a search on the forum for overheating - you will get plenty of reading! These cars are known for cooling system faults that can lead to (or indicate) slipped liners/cracked heads. Go carefully. Good luck

I agree.
With a water pump costing around £30 and a couple of hours work (Including Tea & Fag breaks) to fix, can't understand why it's not being sorted and the car sold as "In good condition". With an admission that there is a problem it's only going to get people to reduce their price....far above the £30 needed to put it right.

There is no timing belt on a V8, it's a flat, ribbed serpentine drive belt (Fan belt to the Old School).

Proceed with caution is my advice !!!
