Hi, Just bought my first P38 and we're trying to sort a few problems on it.

I have three white connectors coming from under my seat. One is smaller than the other two.

One of the larger white connectors is connected.
The second of the larger white connectors isn't plugged in and there doesn't appear to be anything to plug it into.

The small connector has a yellow plug coming from the loom going in to it.

I'm confused.

Is the one with the yellow connector plugged in for the airbag?

Where is the other white connector supposed to be plugged in? Should there be a Y cable or am I missing a bit of loom? Have the seats been changed perhaps?

The car is a 96 P38 SE 4.0

Thanks,
Samantha.

You need to get a copy of RAVE and study the wiring diagrams. There are many connectors that may not be plugged in, because your particular vehicles does not have the part fitted that they service. If your vehicle has air bags be very careful what you plug into where, if you don't want a face full of rapidly expanding bag.

My other half has had a look at the rave wiring diagrams and he said they don't show more than one connector for each seat, RAVE also doesn't seem to show a wiring diagram for the SRS either.

Obviously on a heated seat you need two connectors, one to confirm somone is sat there and at least one for the heater element???

It's not got the electric adjustable seats, but the spare plug is coming from the seat, not from the car loom. It looks like it would be the connector for the backrest heater element, but there's nowhere to plug it in.

The heater doesn't work on that seat, and the wire from the plug that's connected loops back into the yellow plug. I was wondering if the spare connector not being plugged in could be the reason for the airbag light being on? ie. it's missing an earth as a result?

Maybe?

I've also noticed that the seatbelt reminder never sounds. It lights up on startup as normal and goes out as though you have your seatbelt on, even if you haven't. Must be related?

The seat does not have a pressure sensor as far as i am aware. Does your car have seat heat switches either side of Hevac unit? Seat belt warning is switched in BECM mine has just a warning on dash no sound. You need to go to electrical trouble shooting manuals for all the circuits, connector locations Etc.

He's looked in the ETM but the information just isn't there. Yes it has the heated seat switches and they light up, but the drivers side doesn't work. I realise they may be faulty, but we don't understand why there's a plug on the seat that's got nothing to connect to on the car.

So the heated seats work without someone sat in it? Or does it go by the seatbelt fastener?

I assume the plug everyone mentions being problem (the one they say puts the airbag light on) goes to the seat belt fastener?

Do you know if most seats have two connectors for the heated seats?

They just work from the switches on the centre consul as far as i know. Drivers seat not working is a common problem wires break under cushion. Don't know much about heated seats to be honest will have a look and see if i can find out what should be. Ok have had a look, diagram M6 shows two eliments linked together. The two connectors if you take note of their numbers then goto connector views, it shows you what shape they are, how many wires they carry, the wire colour code, and connector colour.

Thanks wammers.

We're not just joining up to get info, we're getting quite into the whole land rover thing. He's on the lookout for another S2a and he's pretty good with cars (restores classics for a living) so I'm sure he will be able to help others out too.

I love my P38, despite its faults. He's just rebuilt the fusebox so that got a bunch of things working and once the airbag light is out and we fix the rear wiper, keypads and blown dash bulbs we will have a fully functioning P38! lol

Thanks for that, but it's for 99 and up models, mine doesn't have a 3 pin connector, it has three two pin connectors and wiring colours are all different.

We're just going to have to remove the seat, carpet, console etc to see if there's one trapped under the carpet somewhere.

It's strange that none of the pictures I have seen on the many P38 sites show the same connector arrangement as mine under the seat.....frankly, they all seem to be different from eachother.

Here a pic of my seat (RR 4.6 HSE 1998, heated electric seats with memory and blah blah blah, no airbags).
On the left you can see two withe connectors. This are the heated squab (small) and cushion (larger) connectors.

There is a third connector coming from the Rangie and going in the slot on the right (grey empty slot on the right). There are no other plugs on mine.
On the top you can see my mobile version of microcat. :D

Lol @ your microcat! He's lovely.

So I have a spare connector seat back connector and the plug that goes in to the small heated seat connector (which is the seat base, right) is yellow...and that's usually related to airbags isn't it?

I suppose this means someone has messed about with my seats and the only way to see what's going on is to take it all apart?

Thanks for your help guys!

Never saw what an airbag connector looks like. I can’t help you any further, sorry.
Have you considered that maybe the previous owner has swapped a pre 1999 seat for a later one with leather in better shape (fitted with airbag)? Have you got a small airbag label on the side of your leather squab cover?
