Just found this in some old tech data seems to sum your problem up fairly accurately.

CODE: 30 FPOS, Gear position switch inaccurate while running.

EFFECT: Limp home in third or fourth.

DESCRIPTION.

During normal operation the gear position is read from the XYZ switches. This information is also read by the BeCM so it can enable/disable cranking and display the currently selected gear on the message center.

If the lever position does not return the correct selection then the BeCM, TCM and H-GATE will receive incorrect information.

If the wiring between the XYZ switches and the TCM is good but the wiring between the XYZ switches and the BeCM or H-GATE is faulty, no fault code woud set but a gear indication problem would exist.
As the sport function has gone and the gear selected is not displayed on the dash, the XYZ switch or the wiring sounds like a good bet IMO

Sorry if I upset your sensitive nature :) Sent many of your lads out of the door of a Charlie 130 from 1200 ft and many from lower altitude. Shuffling cargo was our terminology.:D:D

Yeah 800 ft will do. Or for the really tough ones five feet without a chute. :D:D

Did some trials with the Paras, 600ft with our airspeed increased by 20 knots. Interesting.:D:D. My most interesting was the first jump out of a balloon at Weston on the Green. You could hear a pin drop on the coach from 1PTS Abingdon, it was bedlam on the way back:D:D

Remember two lads who had transferred out of the paras to our mob on parade one morning. Usually reason was reluctance to jump. Drill sergeant greeted them with "Come from the paras have you lads?" "Yes sergeant" "Very good" the sarg replied. But as he walked away. He said, "Well i've got some bad news for you, in this mob every f***er jumps." True story. :D:D:D

I had one prick in Fuerte telling me he was in the Paras but refused to jump:confused: I said you were thrown out or RTUed then. He said no I called him a lying bull ****ter. I think he was really SAS, Saturdays and Sundays aka TA.:D:D:D

Don't forget to knock off now and again for a wet and a banjo. Good luck.:);)

Had to laugh at this before I had even read the other posts as just had a wet and a fried egg banjo  Hoofing

Wonderful world of Range rovers this morning.
.It was snowing quite heavy here this morning and needed to get across town so though give it a try. The gods were smiling as everything is back to normal and running great and all the drive and gear indications are on the dash.:clap2: So will defiantly check out the wiring connections to see if any are loose or need some attention. just so relieved its not the actual box.

Thanks again for everybody's help, just hope I can return the same sometime.

Know nothing about it, but as a kid I used to watch military daft buggers jumping from a barrage balloon on Wanstead Flats. No idea what the height was but it didn't seem very high. Over time I saw one or two taken away on stretchers:eek:

Funny old world, everything worked perfect this morning but many thanks for this I will check it out as I may have a dodgy connection. Just so pleased that it seems the box is not at fault. :clap2:. if I do find the problem I will post and let you know. Thanks again,

Be 800ft, they hook a flag every 200ft on the cable so the ground observer knows what height you are at if your chute fails. He will shout to open your reserve over a megaphone. If the reserve doesn't open you take them back to stores to be replaced as one first time jumper was told by his PTI. It's very quiet up there in the gondola, just the sound of the wind in the rigging.:)
