OK, so I thought i would do the car a favor today and so I changed the oil, and filters. Finished, up started the car and selected 'D' and the car wouldnt move.

I tried engaging low range (lights bleep etc) but still no drive.
I tried Reverse, 1,2,3,D again, still no movement. When the car is in reverse, the reversing lights are on, but no movement.

I dont hear any noises when I swap from P to R or D.

Any idea as to what this could be causing this problem?

Was flaring between 2nd and 3rd for the last 5 months, but thats all.

Vehicle is a 1996 P38 DSE

If you changed the gearbox oil, did you finish filling cold with the engine idling and did you move the lever slowly between P & 1 and back again? If not there will not be enough oil in the box.
The "flaring" between 2nd & 3rd is the same problem I have, replacement gearbox time I fear.

I changed only the dirty black sludgy engine oil, not the gearbox.
Yes, I think its time to change the auto, stay tuned for next post!!!

OK Im an idiot, problem is now fixed.

What I did was drain the transmission fuid and add 5 lires of engine oil to the engine oil.
Should ve clicked at the time that 10 litres should have gone in.
I realised what I had done whilst trying to sleep last night.

i guess that's better than putting 5 litres of engine oil in the transmission!
I'm amazed there's room for an extra 5 litres in the engine. Or was the engine 5 litres short to start with?
