Hi All,

1997 P38 V8, owned it for about 5 years now, always had this annoying groan when turning the steering at low speed. Groan is now getting more annoying. Took it to supposed expert who dismantled the steering column and "greased everything" ... made no f'in difference!

Dont really know where to start, fluid is new and topped up, tyre pressures correct. Noise seems to be centred on steering column, happens on both locks .... any thoughts please.

cheers
Martin

I have the same issue with mine. Other than it only happened when I turned the wheel to the right and NEVER happened when the car was cold.
Was once suggested that problem was air in the steering box. I did try and bleed it which changed the noise to happen when I turned the wheel to the left??? I am convinced that air has at least something to do with. I have recently bought new fluid so I can change out the old stuff and start from new but with the weather etc I just haven't got round to it.

Thanks JT. I am thinking steering box maybe. It doesnt happen (or I dont hear it) at anything over 5 mph, its only at low speed when I believe the power steering pressure is higher. Thanks for the suggestion though and certainly worth a try .... once the weather warms up a bit.

I'd try changing the fluid first. If you undo the reservoir on the oil burner you can tilt it over to drain the reservoir and then refil it. Run it a while and then repeat. Over a few weeks it will all be changed, near enough. Lock to lock should push the air through.
