P38 Select Neutral Message

Did you try to go over the "H" gate for low?

What position is the actual selector in when you see this message?

Try moving all the way up and down a few times with the selector.

What item does the damp affect.i have a windscreen plenim screw missing water penatration the one on the drivers side is half screwed out as well.

Damp in the car can potentially affect anything electronic. Damp in the drivers footwell commonly affects the BECM causing many different faults. You need to get the car dried out in order to make progress. You also need to fit the plenum screws with a good coat of silicone mastic on the threads as they are a common leakage point.

Done all that the flashing lights come on when I put the ignition on and flash continuesly they never go out

And the message centre says put it into neutral

I do agree

The message is to warn you that neutral gear is not engaged in order for the gearboxbox to change from hi/low.

You didn’t say if you tried to move it to “low” across the gate.

does it still drive?

edit , don’t do it, it was a question if you HAD tried it and now you get the message.

Is your p38 an auto or manual on the manual there is a coller on the selector rod that operates the neutral switch an the coller moves causing that message when you want to change between HI&LOW ratios.

It's an auto

Yes it drives

I still say it's a damp problem affecting the BECM

Becm on its way back from collrova it was damp and it was in lockout so lhope it may be ok now

Only if you get the car interior dry.

Padding in the footwell can hold gallons if it’s been getting in a while. Easy to see if you pull up the carpet plus you can feel the weight, it’s pretty light when dry.

It's an in park when it comes up on screen

I had same issue with water getting in, I removed the scuttle under the windscreen removed wiper motor assy, removed both the plastic air intake housings from the bulkhead underneath these is a foam gasket which had deteriorated, after cleaning the areas and components I resembled it all using Tiger Seal in place of the failed gaskets and replaced all the screws with stainless steel, new cabin filters fitted and leaks is sorted. I had a few of the screws holding the plastic housing shear off but the tiger seal being an adhesive sealer has them securely fixed
