Hi all,

well as i said my P38 infrequiently has Power loss and engine check light comes on while driving, so if i select "N" while driving and wait a moment, then the engine light goes off and the power comes back, drop back in to "D" and your away. sound familiar to anyone?

so whats this gonna cost me to get fixed? and how many hrs or trawling through ebay looking for a part am i going to have to spend?? lol

and if its important im driving a P38 2.5 DSE, Automatic, 174K, 2000 reg

Garret,

You need a new no. 4 injector and a crank sensor. Mine did exactly the same thing. Used to cut out regularily when I'd back off the throttle like on a downhill stretch of road. The Bosch EDC uses the needle lift sensor to determine the revs. If it doesn't get a figure it likes it goes to the crank sensor. I had a dead crank sensor and an intermittent fault on the no.4 injector. When it went looking for the back up from the crank sensor it wasn't there and the engine cut out.
The best place to get the needle lift sensor is from TT Automotive in Loughborough,England TT Automotive - Website coming soon . They'll probably have the crank sensor too. I got my crank sensor from McEll's but you know what they're like.

There are plenty of reasons for this to happen, find a decent independant and get it on Testbook.Have the codes read and get some live data readings done.Or you could just buy a load of expensive bits that may or may not fix it........

You can even get those symptoms from a blocked fuel filter. Diesel freezes at -15C so could also be the fuel waxing if it's only happening in this very cold weather.

Could still be a blocked fuel filter. Simple things first:D

but if it was a fuel filter would the engine check light come on? if i dont shift to "N" it will conk out, but when i do and give it a sec it powers back up. im guessing if it was a fuel filter it wouldnt matter what i did it would still conk out. i will check it (as you say start with the simple stuff) but i think the 1st diagnosis might be the right one.
