As you look at the plenum chamber from the front of the car there is a small hose that comes out of the left hand side. If the engine is on this gets sucked flat (a vacuum is drawn on it). Is this right???? What is the hose for? I've looked through all the books that I have on the P38, but cannot find out what it is. Please help!

It's not right because the vacuum function will be inhibited.

Which component does the flattened pipe go to.

If it disappears down behind the engine towards the rear of the car it may be a vacuum feed to the transmission which tells a valve the state of the engine and when to change gear.

Just a thought.

It looks like the breather to the rocker cover. The oil mist makes them soggy over a period of time. Replacements are cheap enough. Make sure the hole is clear, there is a plastic "Tree" inside the spigot and this tends to get clogged with crap effectively blanking the hole off and putting extra strain on the hose. You may have to remove the rocker cover and drill it out to remove it. Remember to clean the s**te out afterwards before you refit the rocker cover.
