Hi all

Family of mine has a Disco with back air bags. Does anybody know if it is possible to fit coils together with the air bags? He want's to give the air bags and comp a rest and only use it when loaded.

Everything is possible.

Assuming he's going to spend all that money on this daft idea, why doesn't he

1. take off the airbags and disable the compressor, and fit springs right now? He could save the air bits for being replaced later when he gets fed up of the not so good ride on springs, and the loss of self-levelling.

or

2. use the money to buy two new airbags and a new compressor NOW, thus he could enjoy all the benfits of air suspension knowing that when the compressor fails or an air bag bursts, he has the bits in hand.

or

3. and this is really clever .... leave the car exactly as it is, enjoy the air suspension, and keep his money in his pocket ready to buy spares but only when something breaks! BRILLIANT!!! This way he gets all the benefits and doesn't need to lay out any money at all until the day it breaks! Even better, it might never break!

Next question ....

Hi Charles

Thanks for the great advice.

1. He wants to change it 'cause it is broken ( Slow rising and gives error every now and then.
2. We stay in DARKEST Africa, so no Landy parts are cheap or available.
3. If he can fit the coils, wouldn't the bags and comp work less, last longer?
4. I told him to buy a P38. but he is a wiseass ! ! !

Oh Gosh .... then the best plan is probably to get the whole coil spring conversion kit, and either fit it right away, or hold on to it till the air suspension fails.

I don't see any way to fit coil springs in addition to the air bags. There isn't a lot of space, apart from where the springs sit now.

It might be a plan to ask on the forum how to "service" the air compressor, or clean it out, or whatever, to make it work reliably. The little lever arms on the rear suspension arms are the height sensors, and they need cleaning and freeing off every so often, but I think there's a trick to do FIRST - like jacking the chassis right up, and letting the axle come down full drop BEFORE you start work. I bet someone reading this knows exactly what needs to be done!
