Owned a 98 2.5 DSE Auto for 6 months it has done 78,000 it has a few faults which are spoiling my enjoyment of what is otherwise an excellent machine can anyone help diagnose them.

Firstly when I move the gear selector over to low the lights flash and the beeper sounds and does'nt stop if I move the lever to a drive position the obc says select neutral. When I move back to high all is normal

Secondly the outside temp gauge behaves erratically which in turn effects the climate control. On first starting it more often than not works ok displaying the correct temp and the aircon works ok but after turning off and stopping when I come back to the car the temp displayed is zero after 5 to 10 mins driving it slowly creeps up until it registers what I assume is the correct temp the air con kicks in at 3 degrees I have fitted a new sender behind the grill which has'nt had any effect

Also suffering from the hot start problem but enough threads on that subjrct already

I have exactly same problem with the ambient air sensor reading 0 then sometimes reads ok.
going to fit new sensor tomorrow. £18 from landrover dealer

Different sensor for vehicles before vin 39000,

Let me know the result I tried this but did'nt cure problem, on the cars last visit to the main dealer they reset the system dont know what that entailed if anything but the temperature reading seems to rise from zero quicker

I replaced the outside air temperature sensor today, when I took bumper off I found an old sensor still on bracket and another sensor taped to the front crossmember. So I replaced sensor and bracket. When I checked the two old sensors against the new one they were all reading 18K ohms which is the correct resistance for todays temperature.

So I have two ambient air sensors for spare. The guage is still reading 0 degrees sometimes.

It only takes a true reading over 15mph i think

Sorted ambient temp problem. A new unit cured problem. Heating and vent ecu in dash

Hi it seams you have the correct answers already for outside air temp and hot start fault, the high/low range fault could be just bad connections on ecu for transfer box which is located under passengers seat, just make sure all pins have a good contact, from memory if you place a fuse in slot 11 i think under drivers seat can you hear the motor move on back of transfer box,the message in the display is an automatic message generated by the becm when fuse is fitted so this gives no indication of true gear position, you can then put it to a gear to see if its neutral but its possibly going to be the high/low range motor on back of transferbox, these have been known to burn out the transferbox ecu at the same time if they have got stuck, goes into more depth and wiring so check out the simlper bits first hope this helps, tiga
