I have no idea why but somehow I'd got it into my head that the hot-start was only an issue on earlier (pre-98) models? Think it was a theory by Wammers or Saint or possibly Datatek about the fusebox layout and rating changing on the later models?

Hot start problems affect all M51 engines. Other things can also cause starting problems, low cranking speed, fuse box problems etc.:)

More often the blend motors causing the book to show, on later cars aircon mal function does not seem to produce the book, at least it does not on mine.:)

mines a 96, sometimes, not always has the book ? how much are you looking at for blend motors inc labour would you say ?

what do the blend motors do exactly ?

My 99 car's AC needs recharging and the book symbol is there. HEVAC codes were cleared when the blend motors were changed last year so I'm guessing the low-pressure is triggering the fault code.

Two blend motors for temperature control, one for passenger, one for driver, third blend motor is for distribution:)
Big job to change them if done by the book at a dealer. Lots of short cuts for DIY.

Ok the saga is ongoing...

THe range rover has now decided it doesnt like starting when cold..... or in general...

Tried to start it today after not using it for 2 days, and it wound over for a looooong time and then started with a puff of smoke. Ran fine though, and was as ever as smooth as anything.

Drove to local shops and on restart, engine being warmer, it started in half to third the time.. Filled the tank half, and it started in a similar time again.

Sooo, now left wondering.

Is it glow plugs, leak off pipes, air in the system or the fuel lift pump... Or does it just not like me...

I'd check the Glow Plugs for Juice first, check the Leak Off pipes for signs of splitting, check the clear pipe from the Fuel Filter for Air Bubbles....

If it is down a bit on performance (who can tell on the M51!!) it could be the Tank Lift Pump, check for good flow to the fuel filter....

Also might be time to check the live data and ensure the pump timing is correct, also a static timing of the pump wouldn't go a miss....

Thansk for that,

Im going to change the leak off's today and glow plugs tommorrow.

Hoping its not the fuel lift pump.

An i assume if there is air in the clear pipe? i can bleed it, i keep reading about this 17mm nut?

Yep, 17mm nut on the FIP ,slacken a little with the fuel pump running and this will let the air leave the system.

Right,

Last night i changed the glow plugs and the fuel injector leak off hoses.
Car started loads quicker, so a small bonus.

Now left with a bit of winding over when its warm.
It would appear that there is a HOT START FIX fitted, so just need to now know if this is working.

Can anyone tell me, assuming you ave one fitted, when the vehicle is warm and the hot start box is therefore working, does the glow plug light on the dash engage and light up?

Otherwise, how do you know if it is actually working.

Yes....

Cheap enough to replace - the Fix isn't complex so if it doesn't work - pointless in trying to repair - £30 and you can get another one from the 'Bay.....

Remember the 'Fix' isn't a fix - it just masks the problem - the true fix is to retime the FIP to take out the timing change due to drive chain stretch.
