ok i had another look... it started it up, it ticked over and sounded and drove round the block ok, 7500rpm , although there was still some sort of noise/clunking (not with the actual gear change) somewhere underneath, although only had a 1 mile drive in it and put it back and didnt get it up to normal temp etc

also what ive noticed, when turning the engine off, theres a bit of a noise possibly the exhaust or something has a bit of a "rattle/clang" sort of sound like under drivers seat area ?

should my 1st port of call just give it back to who did the job and say "somethings not right" ...and see what they come back with after having a look around underneath and double checking everythings done up and as it should be ?

Just solved mine. Have a psi power box fitted idled ok when cold but when hot computer showed idle dropped to 370!

This was all done with a matey with autologic at local indie. After some tweaking and stuff the idle was brought up to 780 hot.

Not had the problems since. Suspect its down to worn solnoid thingy on top of fip. Move the idle move the arm of the worn section im led to believe and should be fine for a few more months. I do believe however the dmf is truly at fault but this argument would struggle to explain the same occurence in autos

thanks fella..mine is MANUAL !! as that link suggests, the flexi plate...which is what i asked earler in thsi thread that ive seen that, but manual do not have a flex plate apparently

although,....i DO have a rimmer bros power box thing fitted, could this be something to do with it ? although why would it of been fine before the clutch change and different now ?

no only autos ,you have a dmf,you could probaly ease symptoms but id think theyd come back as it gets worse as it will dmf is part of the clutch assembly unlike traditional flywheel

i reaslise that, BUT... im trying to establish any other maybes before just assuming its the DMF and automaticly having a £650 bill... which i just cant stomach :(

why would the dmf be totaly fine beforehand, and on inspection have no issues, and also tickover hot or cold was fine etc etc... to then be like this now after a new clutch ?

if its a when warm problemm, could anything else, like for instance afro man aero above, have an issue similar that was fixed with the power box causing it, something i also have in mine, or generaly something else slightly effecting the idle ?

im just clinging to/praying, the hope its not the dmf :(

if it is...im going to have to pin the blame on the persons who did it and say i want the labour sorting out

tbh this whole thing has been a nightmare all week and i finaly thought id had it done

same reason why ive just cured same thing on a td5 defender i rebuilt gear box and transfer box they complained it did similar to yours ,i asked if they changed dmf with clutch they said mechaic said it checked out okay ,once gear box was off it was obvious as wellas rotational movement the whole lot could be pulled away from solid part of flywheel ,they should have changed it

tbh if it comes down to the flywheel causing this and it should of been changed....im going to be furious with him and hes going to have to do the labour for free and get this put right

really i need to get the car looked at by someone else and diagnosed and checked over whats been done has been done right etc and give me their opinion

:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:):):):):):):):):):):):):):)

bit of joy at long ****ing last with it today, .....took it to another mates place today, his boss is very knowlegable on these but is rarley there, anyway he was in he said bring it up were not too busy

on the way it was making the noises, some clunks, vibration on tickover...heavily when on an incline and hand brake applied...thats when it seemed worse, and also some clunking/unhealthy sound as you stop the engine

so his boss gets in it after a chat, starts her up 1st thing he says "thats the dmf by sounds of it" :(

so he takes it round the block and were stopping, starting, hand brake on incline etc.... he says hmmmm, the clutch isnt quite centered, but as its new it beds in and will center after a few hundred miles, he says the exhaust is sounding iffy/touching, dmf feels ok to be fair

get it back and up on the ramp, its ticking over making the noise and vibration..gets under takes 1 look...there it is te exhaust, its touching the cross member, transmission jack on it and lowers the ramp so it bends it up a bit, noise stops

he takes it out again....noise and vibration all stopped, drove and sounded like it should , he has a little play and says the dmf seems fine

and me a happy boy :D:D such a relief it was something simple and no more taking it apart needed, drove it back it was like it was brand new , smiling

i pray thats the end of it !!!!

Thankfully had it confirmed mine isnt a DMF and its something simple. As it seems worse when its lower on fuel.

Poss sucking air in in tank fuel pump? Also if you you've never ha the tank flushed might be trying to scavenge the sludge at the bottom. Especially if youre a regular user of supermarket fuel or those with high bio blends

i looked in to this a while back, as mine once had slight issues but was low on fuel.... fromw aht i gather...if ytou have problems with it cutting out after a run when at traffic lights (same as a dmf symptom) stuttering on tickover, cutting out....when low on fuel , that can be the fuel pump , and i belive thats also a costly fix -removal of the tank etc, or cutting in through the floor above

but - i keep my tank always over the 1st white fuel marker and treat that line as the empty line, and not had any issues since

update on mine- its been great since the exhaust issue was sorted, and im once again enjoying the p38, a nightmare when they go wrong- but fantastic when they are right !!!
