thanks everyone for your input if i do change it will be later in the year . my p38 has 250000 miles on it and i have a lot of work and rebuilding done to it and while it is running and driving like new it beginning to look a bit worn and i was thinking of buying a 322 for "herself" keeping the p38 for my own driving and tearing about . you have helped me a lot the only thing thats an issue is the price of parts i dont have to worry about garage costs as i do my own work. once again thanks for the advice. john.

when checking a vehicle if the atf in the auto box is gone black does that mean that the box is in trouble??

If its an L322..well...

Petrol;- not necessarily. It can jsut me that the atf has overheated due to the trans overheat. If it has it will oxidise. ass long as the boxs still beves falutlessly a simple drain, oil filter chage and the same again in 6000 miles should be ok. On no account, I was told be a dealer, flush the box. As with all aged things it has settled down and supposedly a flush can cause more problems than good. If the atf has glitter like flecks then the cahnces are the T/C is going. There should be other symptoms like a cattle grid judder thru the car to show its going. Its a mendable job on the petrol and doesnt mean a new box.

deisel;- well...mmm.. it could be the oxidation as above but if the filings are there then that is more of a prob. it means that the T?c is prob knackered but because of the week alloy in the box then the box prob wont be far behind. new box....

I seem hard on the deisels but believe me Im not. they are fantastic cars, great engine, mpg etc etc but the box is the weak point. if you have one with a recon box it hopefully will go on for long after you have sold it. if not budget for it and smash the price down.

I think it really bad that its a design fault and Lr /bmw havnt been made to rectify it. If I had bought a brand new TD and the box had gone after 50/60000 I would be really really p****d.......

had a P38 for over 5 years...traded to an l322 last october..at the moment i would say the
l322 has the edge, yes a few niggles, but the ride comfort more than makes up for them.

in the 5 plus years i owned my p38 never had a bother, service regular and they run and run. only work needed was a new fuel pump

following the advice posted on this thread the mail concern seems to be the gearbox and water getting into electrics? when landrover stated the box does not need an oilchange does that mean they do not have a drain stud??

Nope they have a drain and fill sump plug
Infact I changed my gearbox oil and filter just recently
The box feels a lot smoother now

Iv bought a drum of the oil and do I plan to change it frequently
Oh and it's a gm box

Lol

Well I had a look at a GC 3.0 overland today but it was rough for the money, got me thinking that a petrol L322 looks good value, the premium of buying the deisel would pay for a lot of fuel, does a lpg converted 4.4 have much issues if I found one.
Davie :D

There's lots of good examples out there
Just don't rush and buy a rough one
