My P38 was out of action for 2 months (long story ) , of course battery flat, recharge no prob , now it doesnt wanna play . I have previosly had to recode the key (left 1, right6 etc ) . now when i try alarms, lights the whole shebang . any ideas........... oh! yeah always shows incorrect code on the dash ?????

i would check the code is correct, ring a main LR dealer and ask them to give you the code or at very least explain your situation and ask them to confirm or deny the code without disclose the code !

wasn,t there something about you put the key in the drivers door turn it right then enter the code,or was it left then enter the code,i know my mate had bother with his till he tried the above method and it worked straight away

yes,as i mentioned B4 ,i did have a problem a while back my key battery was u.s. changed it and i managed to re-code the key to the car. so therefore i know that the code is correct . my problem now is during the process of putting in the code (i.e. left 2, right 3 etc ) at the end of that process you normally can get in the car and start the thing . but no the alarm sets off !! my other problem is i live in bloody france, costs a fortune at the land rover dealer and thats 60 miles away !!

does the engine start? i assume not. you are putting in the 4 turns then starting the code?

have you followed the method here

there is no reason that the code shouldnt work unless the becm is fried as the codes are in non volitile memory so are retained.

also if the alarm is going off then the car thinks it is locked. i would take the door card off and try again as sometimes this can cause the door sill lock button to stick and not register against the microswitch on the lock mech. also check inside the door to see if any connections are off or need cleaning up!

i suspect that the car is not recieving the correct code due to some mechanical obstruction and thus the turns are not bieng fully recognised. i.e if your code is 1234 the car is expecting 4 1 2 3 4, if one turn or more is not recognised then it will become 4 1 1 3 4 or some other permutation hence the wrong code ,message.

also take the battery leads off for about 30 mins to clear any remaining entries and retry, after checking microswitch operation.

if/when you get to the microswitch there is only a single wire to it, these have been known to come off/have bad connections!

Is this whats called a key code issue and can make a car a non runner?
How easy is this to resolve?
I've come across another reasonably priced one that just says "non runner due to keycode problem"
Easy quick cheap fix?

it can be but you need the code to even try to sort it! and if the current owner knows its a keycode issue surely he has typed it into google????
