Drove my 2002 P 38 in to local car park when engine died, showed gearbox fault, engine would spin but not start. AA were superb, came out and then took the car to Chichester 4x4, Phil has had the car for a week now every day he starts her 3 or 4 times no problem, nothing shows on his lap top, he can ot find a fault, any ideas? he is worried to let me have it back in case it happens again, I need the car to take my wife to hospital apps.

Petrol, 4.6

Ok don't know why it stopped maybe a glitch in idle control. But gearbox fault will come up if you coast with ignition on and engine stopped. Sometimes strange things can happen to these cars because of RF interference. When you pull into a petrol station with wifi pump communication for instance and the car won't start until it is move away from the forecourt. Does happen.

Hi, do a list of physical checks, I.e, oil level and quality, air flow meter clean and wiring plugs associated with the gearbox check for cleanliness or broken connections. It sounds like a one off occurrence or the start of something to come. It will happen if its going to. Dont panic to much as it is easy to get caught up in paranoia with these things leading to an unpleasant feeling for the car. If it Is your second car use it less for the important journeys, I.e. The hospital run and use your daily driver instead. But the checks are less expensive than pulling a box out. Good luck.

It has nothing to do with the box. If the engine stops on a P38 and you coast to a stop gearbox fault WILL come up on message centre. Will go away when engine is running and engine speed signal is being received by gearbox ECU.

Thanks for the elbow, miss read.. physical checks again are always a must, resistance and live recorded data from a good scanner can help to analyse problems.

Update, garage have been starting g her a few times every day and always fine, today it would not start and they suspect fuel pump as they could not hear it primitive g at start up

Funny enough just posting about the lift pump on mine. Running ok. Out the following day, cranking over but not starting. Have some checks that Wammers recommended to do later but not hearing the pump prime on start up either.Any other symptoms that you noticed? Mine was poor on inclines.

Yours is a diesel his a petrol different animals. A diesel will run quite happily with the lift pump duff if there is plenty of fuel in the tank because the injection pump will pull fuel out of the tank but will lose power on hills. Petrol won't run at all without lift pump because it runs to pressurise the fuel rail to 35 PSI for startup when ignition is switched on. Without this pressure, on a petrol injection cannot take place.

I had a car in a while ago with a dodgy fuel gauge sender, ford wanted 500€ for a new pump. I found the plug to be at fault, 50€ fault fixed. The customer was err very happy.

Since getting my car through the mot, it has stalled 3 times now, always restarts immediately and I am thinking crank sensor.

My reasons for this are because it only ever happens after I've driven for a bit, switched off for around ten or fifteen minutes and go to drive away again it simply stalls.

I know for a fact cranks sensors can fail when hot, so if it becomes more frequent I'll mostly be replacing it...

Your crank sensor should read 0.86 ohms with a test meter.
