Hi,

I have a P38 with a gearbox problem and just wanted to know if anybody knows which part/s has broken.

The RR is a 4.0 v8 made in 2000 with the automatic box. It has covered 114000 miles and doesn't have a tow bar fitted. There is a slight oil leak from somewhere within the bellhousing and the box has run low on fluid once. There is no fault showing on the dash and with the RR in 'P' or 'N' you can hear a very faint ticking sound from the gearbox area. The filter was changed in the box about 5000 miles ago.

Story till now,

I noticed that the front tyres were starting to wear on the edges so fearing a siezed viscous coupling I removed the front prop.

Then about 1000 miles later it started to slip in reverse to the point where I had to go into low ratios it I had to reverse up even the slightest hill. This wasn't a slow process, on the Saturday before the Monday this happened I had completed a 200 mile motorway run with no problems, including reversing up a hill to get to a LPG filling point and the vehicle wasn't used on the Sunday.

I decided to continue driving it while looking for a new box to fit at some point. It's surprising how little to need reverse when you are trying not to use it.

The next noticable characteristic that developed was after selecting 'P' on a hill the car still moved forward/backward with the engine turned off without the handbrake on.

Now it is jurking in 'D', and I am pretty sure it only has a few miles of life left before complete loss of drive.

I now have the option of fitting a second hand box (which seem hard to locate for the 4.0) or reconditioning the box that is fitted. Has anyone had a similar fault? which is the better route to take?

All suggestions appreciated

Re-con box from Ashcroft transmissions.

If you are running with the front prop removed, it could also be the VCU breaking up, they wern't designed to run like that. If it fails you will lose drive.

theres more places than ashcrofts, they get enough advertising as it is clutch f has failed and clutch A is never far behind for two reasons both have the load from getting car moving and clutch debris gets in pistons and packs, someone sheared park brake its only held by 2 small screws, nothing wrong with used box as long as oil in it was clean theres allways enough left to check
